My son is a US Marine.

Does your child serving affect your view of a possible war with China? It does mine.

We aren't going to get into an active war with China. We need each other too much.

So if your son wasn’t a marine, you’d be cool with a war with China?

I wasn't speaking for my son. He is belt-fed and ready.

I was speaking as a parent.

I did not say that.

We may go to war with China regardless. It is a lot more personal when your son may be in the line of fire.

I accept that it is his job. But he is still my son.

I am a third generation combat veteran, my son is serving now as the fourth generation. All wars are stupid because they are caused by and managed by politicians, which are the scum of the earth. I fully expect him to see some combat action, as it is an opportunity for politicians to enrich themselves, which they rarely pass up.

no offense but this shows complete lack of understand of china's situation.

we will not go into an active war with china. China is in a bad situation no matter what

#1- they are a net importer of food and energy
#2- they have an extremely aging population
#3- they have an uneducated population

that are not going to attack taiwan because

#1- the russians have shown in ukraine that their weapons and doctrine are no match for the West. China has most of the same weapons and the same doctrine

#2 even if they took taiwan and successfully kept all the micro processor plants 100% operational, they can not run them. we know this because they stole the tech to build their own years ago and have built them....guess what, they cant run them, they dont have the education to do so and decades of communist rule has hendered development in education.

#3 the min that we put sanctions on them, they are fricked. They cant break a naval blockade and famine would kill hundreds of millions in short order if we put the type of sanctions on them, we put on Russia and that is exactly what would happen if they get out of line

#4 only 1 country in the world has the economy and resource to bail them out should they frick up and its us. They know this, we know they know this and so we know they are just always posturing to maintain control.

so the TLDR version, china cant do shite because they cant feed their populace without us.

CHINA IS a-hole!!!

You join the military knowing full-well what you're getting in to. I was in boot camp a month after graduating high school, in Afghanistan a little over a year later.

If we get into a war with China or Russia, it won’t be your typical world war. It’ll be about who has the best and fastest nuclear missiles. Soldiers won’t make a difference in that kind of war. You’ll be in just as much of a risk of dying as your son would because of the type of warfare that would be fought.

If we get into a war with China, it will be more like the Pacific Theatre of WW II than it will be about nukes. Sea denial, baw.

You think so? I just always assumed if nuclear powers fought each other that it’d be a nuclear war. I thought the point of nuclear weapons was to deter the major powers from actually fighting each other because it would be a nuclear war.

I do.

Force Design 2030 under Commandant Berger:

quote:

Further, the Marine Corps has reorganized some traditional Marine units into what are called “stand-in forces,” whose mission is “to operate across the competition continuum within a contested area as the leading edge of a maritime defense-in-depth.” These small units, armed with anti-ship missiles, are to occupy positions on islands from which they hopefully can sink enemy ships that come in range.

Marine Times

It has come under a lot of criticism. But small, virtually undetectable groups of Marines on small islands can take out shipping for a long way around. Without sea lift, China cannot take Taiwan.

Both of my daughters are married to service members, 1 to a Capt in the Army @ Benning, and 1 to a Gunny in the USMC @ Pendelton.

Both of them are combat veterans who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

It absolutely impacts my views on any possible wars.
