The Louisiana sugar cane industry produced more than 2 million tons of raw sugar for the first time ever in 2022 and is now the top sugar producing state in the U.S.

Jim Simon, director of the American Sugar Cane League, said more than 17.1 million tons of cane was ground at Louisiana mills to produce 2.05 million tons of raw sugar. Three of the state's 11 sugar mills ground more than 2 million tons of cane each.

Sugar cane acreage has steadily increased over the past decade. There were 480,000 acres of sugar cane grown last year, an increase of 102,000 acres since 2015.

This is so satisfying for me after we trailed Florida in sugar production for so many years. Got a family history in sugar processing research. Thanks for sharing.

I was surprised we haven't been for some time.

This state has enormous potential with its natural resources and the hardworking people. Its the politicians that just cant seem to get out of the way.

Sugar producers have been buying up every bit of land they can. Prices must have been very high for sugar for a long time.

Interesting. I had heard that a higher yield variety of cane had been introduced. It was obviously very successful.

Timely weather plays a huge factor in all of this.

Well Florida got into the bath salt and meth game far earlier than most sates. They are hoping that pays off.

For now, some corrupt republican in Monroe is ready to write a bill to soak the farmers on their windfall.

The US Gov manipulates the sugar market to keep prices artificially higher than the global market, while also limiting domestic production. They have to keep the corn growers happy since so much corn syrup is guaranteed into the sweetener market.

Link to a good read about how this works.

My BIL is a cane farmer. He told me the stars aligned and the weather timing was perfect and this was his best year yet. Before grinding season ended he told me some farmers would have to leave cane in the field because the mills had to close. I don't know if that happened or not.
