My son got accepted for a job working for the state department in Pearl, MS. Looking for recommendations for housing/apartments in the area. He is under 25. What does the O-T have in mind?

Turn down the job, or commute to work.

My dad’s side of the family lives in Brandon and it’s right next to Pearl.

Brandon prob best bet

But be sure to drive through any apartment complex you are interested in at night and see how the natives are behaving.

Also ask apartment manager if any units are rent controlled or section 8.

Not Pearl

In order of niceness:

Madison FTW

Reservoir

Brandon

Ridgeland used to be the big deal for 20 somethings but it was going downhill when I was there 5 yrs ago. Probably worse now.

Don't let anyone talk him into Fondren or Belhaven.

Is he looking for single bedroom apartment?

My friends who lived in apartments lived out in Ridgeland.

Fondren or Belhaven.

Would be the ideal location for that age range if he can find something suitable.

There are several nice looking apartment complexes on Lakeland Drive in the Flowood area by Dogwood Festival. My mother lives in Castlewoods and I pass these on occasion. I have never driven through so I can't tell you what they are really like.

I would recommend he check these out and start there...at his age he would be close to some good food, not too far from some night life and he could decide where he really wants to live. Plus it's not far from Pearl.

Here's a link to one of the complexes:

You can visit extreme NE Jxn or the previously mentioned Fondren/Belhaven if you're careful. But don't live there.

Under no circumstances go to West Jackson. Period. It makes NBR look like Palm Springs.

I came here to talk them into Fondren. Especially if young and no kids. Pearl and Brandon are boring AF. Nothing but tract house neighborhoods and big box chains as far as the eye can see.
Lots of money being poured into Fondren right now. Big new hotel, main Trustmark branch + Robert St John is spearheading a multi-million dollar multi-restaurant project and a movie theatre.
Rental housing is plentiful and cheap. Also, he could buy a fixer-upper, live in it a few years and flip for a profit.
Steer clear of Ridgeland, bc of plentiful apartment complexes, lots of undesirable migration across Countyline Road.

Popular suburbs are Pearl, Brandon, and Flowood to the east, Ridgeland and Madison to the north. Lots of apartments in those places except for Madison, I think, which used to be strongly against apartments.

If he wants to live in Jackson in a hipster enclave then I suggest Fondren or Belhaven which are close to Millsaps and UMC in the center. He can probably find a house to rent there.

Ridgeland is fine. Steer clear of Southeast Ridgeland between Lake Harbor and COunty Line Road and Pear Orchard.

Lived in the area since 2013. I wouldn’t live anywhere but rankin county. I have two 20 somethings. Nicer complexes at the reservoir and in Flowood are your best bet.

Madison is in between Jackson and canton and both continue to deteriorate.

Madison county sheriff continues to bow to pressure from other groups. Rankin county doesn’t.
