You are three years behind Yale, Harvard and Brown who thought like you do. Turns out, testing matters and is an excellent predictor of academic success. Duh, who knew???

Taking the entire letter in context, my guess is that this letter is addressed to the parents in a “high performing school”, where you have to talk the parents off a ledge because their kid brought home a B+.

Some of these parents are absolutely brutal on their kids if they’re not jockeying for 1st in the class.

Probably not the best way to phrase it, but I get where he's at. If I was tested on painting shite I'd fail miserably.

That all depends on what you define as academic success.

Knowing the geography of the country we live in is not important at all.

Stuff like this is fine, its when they try to take away rewards for actually achieving something, or give awards just for showing up when there is an issue. To me its a simple fact that people are usually very competent some areas and not as much in others.

That’s pretty old. I’ve seen it posted for a few years now.

I mean, that’s a pretty good message

Completely disagree. It’s a terrible message of saying it’s ok to do poorly on basic standards assessments because you’re good at stuff <0.1% of participants make it as.

quote:

Standardized testing does not determine anyone’s worth or path in life. If anything, standardized testing needs to be done away with.

Agree with the first sentence. Vehemently disagree with the 2nd. Standardized tests are a fine of assessing whether people have the basic fundamentals of concepts mastered AND judge how people react under pressure.

quote:

It’s worthless and is a poor measure of a person’s intelligence.

Again, couldn’t disagree more. It’s not the only measure, but it is a valid measure.

And better teachers

There ya go, blame the teacher. K-12 and not one English teacher ever taught the difference between to, too, and two. Right?

Well , this pudknocker failed the 3rd grade and tried to cheat through law school so maybe tests are not important , especially for heart surgeons.

So now we are hating on people who are trying to remind parents that testing doesn't define them?

That’s not what the principal is saying. The letter says it’s ok that they can’t pass basic, fundamental, standards assessments because little Timmy is an above average athletes or musician or artist.

My 13yr old stresses bad about exams. Some of that is my own doing from his earlier years. But I have stopped putting pressure on him. Anyway, I have told him, specifically about exams, they are only a small % of your overall grade. And it isn't going to make a real difference what the grade is, good or bad. Unless he's on the borderline of pass/fail, which he is never close. Now he's stressing over these Terra Nova tests they are about to start. I told him, i don't care what he gets on it, just to do what he can, and do his best. I tell him those test are for the school, not him.
