It's that time of year again - Why crawfish prices will be high...again

Summer drought and cold conditions cause a struggle for crawfish farmers
quote:
MORGANZA, La. (WAFB) - Between the summer drought and now this brutal cold spot, crawfish farmers say they’re having trouble filling their traps.
Many people are wondering, when and if the price will go down.
It was a frozen scene on Wednesday in Louisiana, and the thing people want the most is a warm pot of boiled crawfish.
But this freeze may have pushed back your plans to find some decent prices.
quote:
“It slows the process of the growth down for the crawfish and uh, when it gets this cold, they really don’t move so you’re not looking to catch hardly anything,” said Garrett Frey with Four Oaks Farm in Morganza, La.
There, the ice on their ponds is around an inch and a half thick. So with no easy way of pulling out the traps, it’s a guaranteed day with no crawfish. While they say they have experienced below-freezing temperatures before, this year is still uncharted territory for them.
quote:
As we get deeper into the season, there is a chance that it may pick up.
But until then, some places will be cutting back on their supply and charging more.
"Everybody wants crawfish but when only a few handfuls of people are catching them, there’s not much you can do,” Frey finished
They didn't even have to use the ol fuel cost excuse this year. At least not yet.

how much do they sell in La?
I used to pay $0.99 lb when I was there.
Now I pay around $8 in long island.

We beat this subject to death a few weeks back. The quick summary is as follows-
You are a nimrod if you don't understand how the drought for sure is badly hurting the ponds.
Prices have been on the low side or steady for the past few years due to great supply.
Hope like hell for some good snow melt and rain so that we can have a good spillway season. Pond season is a disaster.

This has always been a spring time activity for me and my friends. I don't get the hype about having boils before march/april...when did this become a thing anyway?

Eh, boiled shrimp are superior anyway.

Low side? These are the highest prices I've ever seen. No way in hell am I paying $5 plus a pound. It's cheaper to eat steak.

I don't remember any bayous drying up. Who is pond farming crawfish without a way to flood the ponds?
And "unprecedented cold"

The more money you have, the earlier you can eat the crawfish

Go back and read again.
The past two(maybe three) years have been fine with prices, especially considering how much all other things went up.
Yes this year his horrible.

True.
But the past few years I had no problem getting some boiled crawfish in December and early Jan. 5-10 pounds or so just on a football watching weekend.
You really haven't even been able to get any at all around here that I've noticed.

Because crawfish farmers and wholesalers have caught on to what crabbers have been doing for years and shipping them elsewhere.

If you find some for $5 a pound let me know and I’ll buy all of them
5 lb order for $100 at a restaurant in Lafayette

I know this is a joke but I don't get the appeal of having a boil, outdoor activity, when it isn't at least 70 degrees outside...standing outside drinking cold beer in the 40's is kind of retarded

Demand for crawfish outside of Louisiana’s borders grow every year.
Simple economics of supply and demand.
