He’s a Pearl River Community College wildcat that passed through poplarville, Ms. Kid from Bogalusa played music with him till his mom told him to stay away from that jimmy, he weren’t gonna amount to shite. Back when the internet was new he’d post on the L&C bar in Bogalusa’s website.

You can easily argue his later works don't compare to his early ones, but you can't claim he's overrated.

No documentary that I know of. Closest thing to on is the first part of his Tales from Margaritavision video collection (you can find it on YouTube). It includes a profile that was recorded on him in the late 70s/early 80s.
Also, all of his other books other than Pirate Looks at 50 were fiction.. so you can read the autobiography and not miss anything by not reading the other books.
If you ever got to see him live, and want to sorta experience that again, Live From Fin City used to be on Prime and may still be. It isn't a full concert but maybe half to 2/3 of one of his Vegas shows.

Very cool did not know this, nor that Jerry Jeff Walker drove Thompson to Key West. Walker’s “Viva Terilingua” album opened my eyes to that genre, a classic. Thompson, amazing he didn’t kill someone shooting pistols drunk on his arse and God knows what other drugs at his Colorado home backyard. Terrific writer and certifiable lunatic.
Mick Jagger, Jon Bon Jovi and Kenny Chesney are just three other examples along with Buffett who were also astute businessmen. More power to them.

Same. Went to see Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown a few weeks back and Zac Did a tribute to him. Played a few songs as well as the new song and it hit me hard. Again.
I feel like I molded part of my life around some of his music. Miss him too.

He’s always had a lot of haters but I always liked the way he told stories while performing and changed lyrics to fit the place he performed.
I listened to You Had to be There many times in college at LSU in 90s (borrowed a bunch of my parent’s albums). The Coral Reefer band along with special guests performing with him were a big part of his success.
As others have said, music was only a part of his story. I’d watch a documentary that showcases his author, business, and life in general.

Outside of actual family, losing him hits hard. They say never meet your heros, ,and I guess this is a fine example, because so much of his musical persona was crafted over a period of time which created an aura that may have existed, for a time, but didn't endure. Much of my formative years revolved around a fictional version of Jimmy Buffett, and his attitude towards life as depicted by song.
Growing older but not up.

The “Buried Treasure” album & video is a nice retrospective of Jimmy reminiscing over some of his earliest work. And the YouTube videos he made with Savannah during Covid are worth watching too.
Like others have said, I didn’t care much for his later years’ work; seemed like he became a caricature of himself. But his early stuff was sublime. Listen to some of his very first albums like High Cumberland for things like an early version of Livingston’s Gone To Texas. And his original video of Come Monday is a classic.

I read the Buffett biography by Ryan White some time ago. It was interesting reading about how some of his songs came about.
A friend or member of his band would say something interesting, or sometimes even have a couple of lines for a song. Buffett would say "20%" or "30%" or some percentage like that....and Buffett would write the song and the guy would get that percentage of it.
His first seven or eight albums were genius. Songs like Havana Daydreaming and Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes...

A mistake.
Finish it. Then you’ll really want to go back and read the fiction books. But, they are far from necessary to enjoy the autobiography.
