Watching a series on Ted Bundy last night, it struck me just how lucky the guy was to keep getting away with his crimes. Sure, he was “good” at being a serial killer, but how much of that is due to the era? I don’t think he strings together more than one or two victims without getting caught if there were cell phones and video cameras everywhere like today. Throw in DNA forensics, and it’s basically impossible.

Same thing with Gacy, Dahmer… all the famous serial killers from 30-50 years ago. I think there’s high likelihood they’re all caught early on in their crime sprees and barely solicit the notoriety they have today.

Hard to get away with shite these days. Everybody has a GPS tracking device in their hands. Cameras everywhere. Real time video. Maybe they are "obsolete "

Disagree. The I-10 serial killer has been at it for years. I’m not even sure the NOPD is looking for him.

Derek Todd Lee and Sean Gillis both operated for years in an era with DNA testing and increased surveillance.

Obviously it is much much hard to be a serial killer today with all the technology. I'd argue they are obsolete with an outlier or two possible

Perhaps some of the serial killers who regularly post here on the OT or PT can describe for us how modern tech has adversely affected their ability to perform their craft.

Anybody? We're all friends here.

but leaving your phone at home, based on the times it’s left, would be strong evidence when looked at a different way

and not having a phone or never taking your phone anywhere would be a big red flag in life and people would notice

Rural areas and especially places like national parks are still possible hunting grounds. In fact I often wonder if some of the folks that go missing each year in those parks (and its in the hundreds ) arent prey to serial killers.

Yall should watch American Nightmare on netflix. That dude was doing shite so crazy the police didn't even believe the victims.

There is also the possibility of hiding in plain sight.

Typically 100+ murders in BR annually and more missing persons which don’t necessarily result in a body.

Part of why Lee and Gillis could operate so long was that the murder rate was so high those killings got lost in the shuffle.

I don't know the exact stat but I believe whatever agency that tracks serial killers says that there are hundreds active in the US at any given time. Statistically that's basically no one but it definitely more than I would have guessed. Alaska has the most per capita for obvious reasons.

There are plenty of incompetent police departments out there that would probably allow for a decent run, but eventually the digital trail would get them

Maybe they are opting for the mass shooting instead.

Exactly. You'd have to have your phone moving and be used the same as you typically do. I am sure there are some insane people that watch all the true crime shows and are motivated to figure ways to beat the system.

Maybe not obsolete, but more rare...

You'd just have to never have a "victim".

Prey on the homeless and kill by shooting them up with lethal doses of fentanyl.

No, you might not get the fun with the body or the brutality of the kill, but if it's just the killing that you are after you'd probably get away with a lot before they start looking.

Cell phone tower pings, license plate readers, ring doorbell cameras, etc. I'd say it's impossible to get away with abducting and murdering 30 total strangers these days.

As are the large "unhoused" communities in every city. Based on history, we'll be hearing about some prolific killer that lurked as a homeless person and slayed people at random for years. And no-one noticed.
