Just seems like a miserable way to live.

Unnecessary and volunteered drama for the rest of your life.

Why???

Mother-in-law mother's day thread got me thinking.

ETA: Looks like the downvotes are from people that do have the shitty parents.

Well, seems like it would be more miserable to hate my wife and love her parents, for one. Her Mom lives 5 hours away... my wife lives in my house.

ETA: my wife isn't real fond of her mother either.

If my spouse couldn't get along with my family, I'd DX her.

I loved my FIL but he's gone now.

I honestly didn't know them really well when we got married. Sure, I'd met them 3 or 4 times already, but they live 400 miles from us.

Honestly, it wouldn't really matter much to my life if I didn't like them. I'd see them maybe 6-8 days per year.

I never met mine. One refused to leave his country and the other was driven to kill herself by her husband.

Didn’t find that last part out til too late.

OK, but that is still 6-8 important days a year that you would have to endure their company. Just sounds like a shitty way to live.

I guess I just look it as you are not just marrying the person, you are marrying the family as well.

My wife doesn't really like her mother, so I don't think she'd care if I didn't

She's alright.

My FIL was a baw. I killed tons of beers and got into all kinds of crap with that man. Luckily, I ended up really getting along well with him considering I didn't know him that well when we got married. He told me once that I was the son he never had when he was near the end and left me stuff in his will.

What if my wife hates them more than I do?

She didn’t get to choose her parents.

It’s not her fault they’re shitty human beings

I rarely have to see or speak to them.

I adored my MIL. She was one of my favorite people over the entire span of my life.

I dated people in the past and didn’t like their parents, I feel like it caused problems in those relationships. Luckily I like my in-laws.

If you have decent parents who mind their own business and don't "Marie Barone" your relationship with your spouse, everything will be fine.

That’s barely over 2% of the days in a year. You’re marrying your wife not her mother.

Unfair question unless you also add this one, “ How do so many parents hate their children’s spouses?”

I think the above situation is far more prevalent and far more uncalled for.

And it's less than that now that my FIL is gone. My wife was pretty close to her dad and not so much with her mom. I don't dislike my MIL, but it's really a non-issue for me. She has a crazy sister too.

I think it would be a bigger issue if my wife didn't like my parents because we live around them and see them way more often.
