You know that was scary as frick rounding that bend in the ship as that lineup of cannons are firing nonstop into you as you try to make a run for it

Is this one of the battles that earned him the nickname “Unconditional Surrender?”

His first major victory. Was a huge one for early 1862.
Also well below freezing temps.

Yes. Fort Donelson was Grant’s first major victory on the Western Theatre. While Lee was kicking arse in Virginia, Grant secured the siege and offered no terms but unconditional surrender. Previous to this battle, he had sieged Paducah and moved down the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers after he realized Columbus-Belmont wasn’t worth the hassle.

There were two confederate generals that were with Buckner who tucked tail and ran. Buckner actually was good friends with Grant and had bailed Grant out of financial trouble prior to the war, so Grant took it easy on him. Those confederate soldiers and Buckner were eventually paroled.

Grants next battle was Shiloh.

A much wiser use of our tax dollars than sending them to Ukraine.

Lee wasn't the commander of the Virginia forces at the time of Fort Donelson, he was organizing coastal defenses in Georgia.

But great pictures. I'll have to check it out in person one day

This.

Fort Donelson surrendered to Grant in February 1862. Lee would not take command of the Army of Northern Virginia until June 1862.
