I’ve driven a stick shift for most of my life—had one auto for a few years. There are a lot of joys with a stick that you don’t get with an auto. On the other hand, it sucks balls when you get stuck in traffic—especially on the interstate. Being constantly in the clutch is horrible.

No, in fact there is not and I know: No there is not a difference. The concept is the goddamn same, man. All of life consists of mastering the concepts. You don't care how capable I am? You'd better damned well care, because it matters.
To be sure, there is a difference in driving any standard shift transmission. That's the beauty and interesting thing about them. Anyone who knows how to operate a standard would never trash it: it's a badge of achievement, and anything that takes effort to do is trashed by haters who do "not."
Is driving a super car and a truck the same? No. Is driving them the same if you're capable of operating a standard shift? Absolutely so. Is a modern standard tranny super car as fast as an auto? Hell no. But who the frick in this dump can even relate? Not many. 99% of the garbage in this thread is just like the rest of the OT: Garbage.

My wife’s vehicle was stuck. Thousands across the city were stuck. The babies at my sons daycare at the time appreciated the formula and diapers we brought them the next morning. And my mother in law appreciated me driving across town to get her from where she was stranded. May not happen often but I like to be prepared.

I did, but it froze.
Just a link of me driving a five speed sequential box in heavy traffic while holding a phone on the Speedo.
Performance clutch certainly didn't seem like such a good idea after an hour.

I miss the days of driving a manual sometimes, then I get on the interstate in medium/low traffic and love the immediate power response from the auto keeping the turbos spun up.
I get the 'feel' of a manual and being one with the car. Just think it is overhyped, unnecessary, and gatekeeping. I like that technology has made for a better driving experience.

Just get an awd or 4x4 vehicle and put duratracs on it.
I can go through 2ft of snow with ease. And unless on straight ice, never really lose traction in winter weather.

I know what you are getting at, but honestly I just sit in neutral when I’m at a stop in a standard. It is so much easier that having to press the brakes constantly. The beauty of Louisiana being so flat, you never roll back, so it’s great in traffic.

Think this is one of those weird things that is actually illegal to do. I'm pretty sure 'coasting' is still illegal in Louisiana, part of the CDL handbook lists it that way at least.
