So, has anyone noticed the overuse of these words in their corporate work environment? The word “so” is now a filler word like “ummm”, right? So, like, I can handle and accept that filler but in one conference call I was so distracted by the overuse of “right” being used for checking that I couldn’t even focus on the content.

Does anyone else notice the trend of “right” being used at the end of declarative statements? It can come across as condescending, though I know it isn’t meant that way. Clearly it’s not something that’s going to ruin my day, but it’s infected the acumen of so many folks in business and if it would stop, that would be grrrrrrreaaaat.

Anyone else?

Just read the posts on this fricking board. Half the threads start with: "So, I'm looking for a new car..." Gay as frick.

You would think so.

For example:

“So, let’s consider the scenario of LSU and Auburn playing tomorrow night, right, and let’s say LSU covers the spread by scoring a last minute touchdown to win the game. So, say this happens, the folks who bet on LSU, right, they are going to be really happy they bet the line, right, so obviously this would be good for those folks.”

It’s just totally unnecessary. Many really smart people who I respect have adopted this into their vernacular and it’s baffling. Why? To sound like the other smart VP who’s job you’re trying to get?

Saying "right" is how intelligent people say "umm"

Or just don’t say either :)

ummmmm is much less annoying than right.

ETA: sounds like they hear other people they perceive to be intelligent saying it and decide to say it, too. I don’t see how that makes you intelligent at all.

the word "right" in this context means that the speaker still has a childlike fear of unacceptance and needs to check with the listener every 4 words for validation

Yes! That’s how it sounds but these are not insecure folks seeking validation.

I think right is good when actually being used to make sure people are on the same page about things that could otherwise be open for debate or confusion.

It's annoying when it's used solely as a filler IMO.

i remember when older people laughed at younger people for starting sentences with so and now every other boomer is doing it. it's equally gay regardless of your age.

I haven't experienced it, but it seems like they're consciously trying to avoid "um" and see that as a better alternative (which I agree with you isn't one).

"Does that make sense?" was a big one the last few years I was in tech 14'-17'.

Ugh that’s annoying too. I have a sweet, sweet friend who says it after every sentence.
