He would take umbrage at the "soldier surprises Mom".
When I was a kid, we went to some Marine event at Kaneohe MCAS where they were doing landings, flying helicopters, etc. In my loud voice, I said "Where are the soldiers?" I got a look from everyone around me. I learned quickly that a Marine is not a "soldier."

Marines actually love to be called soldier. Gives them a chance to thump their head and scream at you about the Marine Corps. Usually it’s unsolicited but they feel bad talking about themselves ALL the time.
