I’ve been hearing some rumors that Baton Rouge may be getting a hockey team again.

If it comes to fruition, I’d buy 4 tickets on the glass the first day available. I wouldn’t mind them keeping the kingfish name, it’s unique to BR. But I’d be interested in hearing yalls opinions.

Baton Rouge will host three ice hockey games this fall and, if all goes well, the city could have its own franchise 20 years after the Kingfish left town.

The mayor-president's office and others said at a news conference Monday that the Raising Cane's River Center will host three exhibition games this fall and winter. If all goes well, a Federal Prospects Hockey League team could play a full season beginning in the fall of 2023.

"This is something the fans have to want," owner Barry Soskin said. "If the fans want to support this, we'll have a team."

The exhibition games are set for Dec. 8, Dec. 15 and Jan. 2.

The website of the Port Huron Prowlers of the Federal Prospects Hockey League says Soskin is its owner, and that he also has owned various teams over the past 25 years, including the Toledo Storm of the East Coast Hockey League.

The new Baton Rouge team would be an expansion team.

The Baton Rouge Kingfish played in the ECHL when the team moved to Victoria, British Columbia, after the 2002-03 season to become the Salmon Kings. The Internet Hockey Database says the franchise folded in 2011.

Average attendance steadily declined during the team's seven years in Baton Rouge, with each year's smaller than the previous mark. It drew 6,003 in its first season, but only 1,723 in 2002-03.

Before playing at Baton Rouge, the Kingfish from 1988-1996 were the Erie Panthers in Pennsylvania.

The Kingfish made the ECHL playoffs three times, advancing to the quarterfinals in 1999.

In its first game in the city, the Kingfish beat Birmingham 4-2. Its final game was a 2-1 loss to the Arkansas RiverBlades on March 30, 2003.

The River Center on Saturday reopened the ice rink on the floor at the River Center and will leave it open for skating until July 31.

Grew up watching the Ice Gators in Lafayette. I literally never watch hockey on TV, but god damn if that shite wasn't fun in person. I seriously doubt I would become a "fan" if it came to Baton Rouge, but I would definitely go on occasion.

Did the kingfish attendance remain steady throughout their tenure in BR? I know their inaugural season they were very popular. Just don’t recall how they fared regarding attendance in the subsequent years.

I remember going to a few Kingfish games and one time getting to sit on the glass.. In fact, I think they might have been playing the Lafayette team and when they would slam into the glass everyone would beat on the glass wall.

Hockey has always been one of those sports I don't know much about, but wish I followed it more. I would imagine NHL games are fun because the Kingfish games were pretty fun and I knew very little about hockey, other than the basic concept of the game.

Won’t care if it’s not an ECHL team. Nothing will ever top the late 90s ECHL with all the teams along I-10.

Once the ECHL Icegators folded they tried to bring the magic back in Lafayette with a new Icegators team in some Southern hockey league but it wasn’t close to the same.

The reincarnation around 2010 was a terrible product. On the other hand, the arena football league around that time was a lot of fun on Saturday nights.

Someone started a thread saying New Orleans is getting a soccer team.

Would MUCH rather hockey instead.

Biloxi already has a hockey team again.

Why not BR and NOLA???

Do they think they can draw the Acension and Livingston honkies with the interstate expansion about to cause traffic Armageddon?

Biloxi just got back a new team same name as the original SeaWolves. For the 3 exhibition games think the average attendance was over 4,800 but again those were advertised 3-4 months in advance and many businesses and families were able to buy BOGO tickets at like $7-$11 a tick. Do not know if it is at all comparable.

The Shreveport Mudbugs are THE greatest all time hockey team in Louisiana. They still play…different league, but it’s a great time.
