I couldn't see anything with the naked eye but it looked awesome through the camera.

So how does it work regarding best possible time to see them?

You got downvoted, but I agree with you.
It's sorta cool that your phone or camera takes a pink time exposure picture, but nowhere near as cool as actually seeing aurora with you own eyes

I don't consider it an aurora sighting if you can't see it with your eyes.
