Tough Question for this team

This post is in no way saying we don’t need certain players. But it’s interesting how this team is flourishing without BI, Nance, and Naji. I am not minimizing those players, especially BI because of his skillset. But you have to wonder if their absences have led to more playing time for CJ, Trey, Dyson and Jose- where they’ve flourished. Even missing Nance has forcifully made Willie play Zion at the 5 more where we have destroyed teams. I guess the question is did the depth we have hurt us in a sense to getting the proper rotations and chemistry we see now? I know depth is always important but its also important to have defined roles and solid minutes throughout the game. It just feels like rotations are better and everyone has a better feel for their roles.

I have felt like our rotations have been too loose for three years, however it’s a long season and the extra bodies help.

I won't argue that CJ is better than BI, he's not.
But the difference between the 2 is razor thin and much closer than most realize imo.

The question though isn’t is CJ better than BI- but is CJ a better fit with Zion? At the end of the day to be the best team isn’t necessarily just get the best players but get the best ones that fit. I honestly don’t know the answer and still believe BI is super important to this team.

It just really comes down to if you accept that the modern game requires you to have a potent 3-point shooting line up. If so, then having both Brandon and Zion as pillars of your team, making the most money and taking the most shots, doesn't work for a contender.
Now if Brandon would alter his shot profile in the way CJ has this year, even getting back to 2020-2021 where he averaged 6 3-point attempts a game on 37%+ shooting, then you could see a way forward. But as things stand he hasn't done that and you have to seriously consider if keeping (and paying) Trey Murphy as a starter is a better longterm path to success with Zion. That's the whole thing for this team to decide in the next year or so. Maybe you want to convert Brandon into a big point guard who can shoot 3s or maybe a stretch 5 who can defend, or both, and let Trey take Brandon's spot and get up 8-10 3 point attempts per game...

This is really it. When BI comes back we can’t go back to 25 3PA per game again. He has to change his shot profile.

We just lost 4 in a row without BI. This team is capable without him sure but it’s not like we weren’t also doing well and beating teams with BI.

Having BI available is better than not having him available, even though it’s obvious that the other guys have stepped up their game in his absence.

BI has the skill set to be a good fit too. The question is can he make the mental adjustments and sacrifices to let this be Zion’s team? Zion seems to have claimed the team, so I think we’ll see pretty soon whether BI is ready to get on board. To be fair to BI he had stepped up his defense prior to the injury, and that’s a big part of fitting in.
Naji is probably the roster slot you use to bring in a 4th PG.
Nance is probably fine if you had other alternatives that Willie would actually play instead of leaning on Larry even when it’s clear he doesn’t have it that night. I still don’t see why Zellar barely plays. He’s been solid whenever he has gotten minutes. But I would not be shocked to see all new bigs next season.

Post all star break, BI was playing extremely well and seemed to have finally changed his game for the best. Hopefully that continues when he returns. Zion at the 5 works so much better with him and/or Dyson in the game.
I love Naji. But BI, Herb, Dyson, and Trey should get every available wing minute in the playoffs. He's great insurance if we get in foul trouble or injuries pile up, but that needs to be the extent of his role.

Brandon is a really good player. It's not really about that. I think the team has worked with him on changing his shot profile but to little effect. It's a little odd. Two or three seasons ago, he was taking about 6 3-pointers a game on a good percentage. But that has gone away and now a massive new contract is on the horizon. Can you pay him that much if he isn't a potent 3 point shooter, especially when you have a younger, cheaper player on the roster already who can fill that role perfectly? It's a tough decision...

In the 12 games since BI went out
CJ - 27/5/6... 10.8 3pt attempts per game
Trey - 18/7/3... 8.7 3pt attempts per game
Zion 25/5/5

Zion 25/5/5

That's my biggest concern with inserting BI back into the rotation with the biggest game of the season on the line. CJ and Trey are finally comfortable with their roles and are really playing well with the uptick in touches and shots. The last thing we need is for those guys to start playing apprehensive and over deffer in BI's first game back.
BI will need to have a monster game. We can't afford to have one of those "finding his shot" games he's known for coming back from injury. He has to be blazing from the jump.

It's amazing how fast people forgot this team just had a 1-5 homestand. My biggest concern is not BI coming back messing up the chemistry it's that we have been bad at home and for some reason shoot better on the road.

You mean we're 1-5 without Jose. And were 7-5 without BI.

No that would be 1-5 without Jose AND Brandon. And 0-1 without Jose, Brandon and Zion. But keep being disingenuous with the stats.

No shite Sherlock. The entire point was to say we can sustain without BI but we can't when we lose all of our depth and ball handlers which was the case during our 1-5 homestand. This last 4 games proves that genius.

Then say that. Don’t say we’re 1-5 without Jose, say we’re 1-5 without Jose and BI, which is actually accurate and not misleading.
Posted on 4/13/24 at 7:16 pm to LSUgrad88
And saying we are 7-5 without BI includes the 1-5 homestand that you seemed overly triggered about.
Posted on 4/13/24 at 8:30 pm to supe12sta12z
Triggered? Im not the one putting things in a completely disingenuous way rather than saying it accurately. I can’t help that being called out for that triggered you.
