Nobody snorts like Bobby Blue Bland. But I like me some Solomon Burke when I go deep soul....just something about him

Ronnie Milsap - "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere" (1966)

Of course he later became a very successful and dull country crooner, so it's rather a shock to learn he started out with tracks like this.

So shocking, in fact, that it fits better here than in the classic country thread

Timmy Willis - "Easy As Saying 1-2-3'" (1970)

"Deep Soul" cut in Muscle Shoals
quote:

A superb deep church organ opens with a few sparse chords that are soon joined by a sharp and cutting guitar - and Timmy Willis’ exquisitely sweet, light yet rasping tenor declaims the lyrics with an intense and magical conviction. Obviously under the spell of the winning musical formula of the late Otis Redding, Timmy’s voice is actually much more pure and assured. Stunning brass work...cascades across the vocal patterns in an almost independently-minded way and the end result is an outstanding Deep Soul classic....and in order to ease the emotional pain that this presents you with, what do you have to do? Why, spin it again...and again...and again. - Dave Godin

Charley Pride saw Ronnie playing in a club in LA when he was singing more R&B. Charley Pride told him he needed to be a country singer. I used to work with Charley Pride's nephew, he was a huge Ronnie Milsap fan.

Sea of Love

John Phillip Baptiste, aka Phil Phillips of Crowley, Louisiana. Robert Plant had a post-Led Zeppelin hit with this song via his group The Honeydrippers.

Her backing vocals on "Gimme Shelter" are simply classic. She, too, is from Louisiana.
