Magnolia electric company is his best album

I learned Farewell Transmission last night. Played it like 10 times last night. One of my favorite songs ever, surprised I'd never given it a go before.

but I came across the Songs: Ohia song Steve Albini's Blues from the 2002 album Didn't it Rain. Its a pretty melancholic, dark song, but as is the case with any Molina song, beautiful lyrics.

I did a little research to figure out why the song is titled so. It was recorded before Molina ever met Albini from what I read, but Molina respected Albini's workingman approach so much, he wrote the song and titled it that. Speculation is that it was a ploy to catch Albini's attention, and get Albini to work with him.

If that is so, then it totally worked because The Magnolia Electric Co. would be produced by Albini the very next year.

Lyrics:

On the bridge out of Hammond
See them brake lights burning
Feel my motor turnin'
On the bridge out of Hammond

See the big city moon
See how close it comes
See how close it comes

Watch my wiper blades
Pound it like a drum

On the bridge out of Hammond
On the bridge out of Hammond

Think about what's darkening my life
Think about what's darkening my (life, oh-oh-ooh)

See the light of the afterworld
Shining on the ruins (ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh)
Is the love nowhere else?
Burning to the west

See its sulphery shine
See its sulphery shine

From the bridge out of Hammond
From the bridge out of Hammond

See the big city moon
(See the big city moon)
See the big city moon

Between the radio towers
'Tween the big diesel rigs
In a Midwest switching hour
Watch the whole town eclipsed

From the bridge out of Hammond
From the bridge out of Hammond
From the bridge out of Hammond
From the bridge out of Hammond

I believe he is referring to the old 9-Span Bridge in Hammond Indiana that was demolished in 2013. It was apparently the longest bridge over land in the world when it was built in 1937. The cost to build the bridge was a mere $750,000. It went over Gibson Rail Yard-the largest automobile traffic switching operation in the United States.

I think they recently built a pedestrian bridge where it used to be.

Just another guy who was bitter at musicians who really studied their craft and became exceptional players.

He hated Steely Dan and Toto and spent way too much time bitching and moaning about them on social media.

Most cats like that either never took the time to learn or didn’t possess the talent to solo.

Here's a bootleg on YouTube. I have the DVD and I thought it was streaming somewhere but can't remember where I saw that. This one jumps pretty much straight into the Albini stuff though.

Failure- Golden

Eta- I wish I could find the doc with Ken's commentary over it, he really deep dives into how Steve approached the recording process and the different tricks and techniques they used to record.

Tool just gets hated on because they have alot of douchebag fans.

They are a great band though. Respectfully disagree with Steve here.

umm.. Rick Rubin

The sound on “Goat” by The Jesus Lizard shits all over every record Rick Rubin ever made. I’ve never listened to an album where the band sounds like they’re literally playing right in front of you - like the speakers don’t even exist.

Another Albini thing, the dude worked for any artist who wanted to hire him regardless of genre or popularity (or lack thereof) and charged a flat rate his whole career. He never took royalties. The guy took shite from nobody and always had the balls to expose the music industry for the bullshite racket that it always was. fricking legend, RIP.

I saw somewhere he would have made $2 million-$3 million from In Utero if he had points on the album.

I didn’t hear that until 2017 (I’m in my 20s) and it completely blew me off my feet. I’ve never heard guitars that sounded like pieces of glass being fed through a wood chipper. And that drum machine hits like a Mack truck. Nobody did the drum machine better than Big Black - nobody. (It’s an E-mu Drumulator just fyi)
