The 2000s indie-rock anthem has now overtaken Oasis' Britpop ballad Wonderwall to become the UK's biggest-selling single never to reach number one.

According to the Official Charts Company, Mr Brightside's 5.57 million combined sales and streams also make it the UK's third biggest song of all time, surpassing Wham!'s festive staple Last Christmas.

This is calculated from an eye-watering 530.3 million streams (100 paid streams or 600 free streams equal one sale) and 1.1 million copies sold since it was first released in 2003.

It already holds the record for the UK's longest-running chart hit, after spending 408 weeks - or seven whole years - in the UK top 100. Its closest competitor, Lewis Capaldi's Someone You Loved, is far behind, with 234 weeks in the countdown at the time of writing.

Why is the UK so much more obsessed with this song than the rest of the world?

The Killers are way bigger in Europe & especially England than they are in America.

It has a very British sound to it...I never investigated and spent a solid 10 years or so thinking the Killers were British

That's actually more surprising to me. You couldn't walk without tripping over Wonderwall here in the States in 95, I would've guess it stayed #1 in the UK charts forever when it was popular.

Still crazy to me that Mull of Kintyre is the 4th best selling UK single of all time.

Still very big here too, especially Mr. Brightside just go to any bar with karaoke and play it you’ll have lots of people singing along. It’s why Michigan plays it all the time and sort of adopted it

i had to youtube this song

WTF.

i feel like it 'kinda' sounds familiar but its not something i would have ever recognized if it came on the radio; i'd probably change the station.

sad.

Meanwhile in the States it's now a jock jam everywhere much like Seven Nation Army.

I didn't like it or the Killers when it came out. Both have grown on me a ton.

Mr. Brightside has more depth than what I thought it was and the Killers have evolved their sound and made some really great records.

Stuff like the Michigan singalong shows how the song has staying power I didn't think it had.

I'm always amazed when it comes on in big atmosphere environments how many young people know all of the lyrics

I gotta say, I have always really liked this song.. I don't know much about the Killers music outside of a handful of their hits.. which are okay, too.. but this song is just really fun!

I know a bit about their back story from reading Matt Pinfield's book (he was trying to sign them when he was an A&R guy)... one of their songs is about him, but I don't recall the name of it..

I saw them in Barcelona a little over a month ago and they put on a good show..
