Forgot to post some of my takeaways from S2, EP1-3.

If it's your first watch by this point you've probably had a few "is this guy real or not" moments. Well we're introduced to Ned Low in the S2 premiere. And he's pretty brutal. There's not a ton of information out there about him, but just reading his wiki page is pretty crazy. Edward Low

quote:

Low and his pirate crews captured at least a hundred ships during his short career, burning most of them.[1] Although he was active for only three years, Low remains notorious as one of the most vicious pirates of the age, with a reputation for violently torturing his victims before murdering them.[2]

quote:

Low taught Spriggs a torture technique that involved tying a victim's hands with rope between their fingers and setting it alight, burning their flesh down to the bones.[11]

quote:

One of Low's most noted episodes of cruelty followed: in his rage, he slashed off the Portuguese captain's lips with a cutlass, broiled them, and forced the victim to eat them while still hot.[6][19] He then murdered the remaining crew.[1] Low's own men described him as "a maniac and a brute."[16]

quote:

One story describes Low burning a French cook alive, saying he was a "greasy fellow who would fry well"; another tells how he once killed 53 Spanish captives with his cutlass.[6] Some historians, including David Cordingly, believe this was deliberately done to cultivate a ferocious image.[23] Historian Edward Leslie described Low as a psychopath with a history filled with "mutilations, disembowelings, decapitations, and slaughter".[14]

This is probably why he's depicted with the scar across his eye in the show...

quote:

One failed torture session led to one of Low's crew members accidentally cutting him in the mouth. Botched surgery left Low scarred.[5]

Also...

quote:

"Ned Low" is one of the pirates featured on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at the Disneyland theme park in California.

Although Vane killing Low was pretty awesome and sneaking on the ship and the fight between the two of them was legit, I think that is one of the few things the show might have got wrong. They should have kept Low around a little longer. Three episodes wasn't enough for that good of a villain.

Love the fact Vane decapitated him.

Major plot points in next 3 episodes.

Like I said early on in this I’m glad you started this thread. I’d always wanted to watch this show so this is my first watch and it’s been great. I couldn’t help but watch way ahead of where we are. I’ve only got 4 episodes left and it’s kinda a bummer.

he's like the Iron Claw. The real story is actually much worse than the Hollywood version.

I'm on S2E3 so I'm still behind but damn my admiration for Jack Rackham grows with every episode. He's definitely the smartest man in the room but has been dealt some shitty cards and has to constantly work himself out of a hole.

What a great start to season 2. The taking of the ManoWar was a bit contrived but awesome seeing Flint back in charge.

Also watching Silver evolve is such an interesting arc.

You aren't behind. We are still currently on the S2E1-3 discussion. S2E4-6 discussion starts up tomorrow.

I must have missed seeing Vanes's and Rackham's dong the first time through.

Wish I had missed it again.

Flint, Silver and Jack have three of the best story arcs ever IMO. Jack being my personal favorite. Their characters evolve and gain so much depth of the course of this series it's crazy.

Just a few more random thoughts I didn't post about this weeks discussion...

I think the "accounts of goings on" that Silver started doing to earn his keep is really where the legend of Silver starts. It's a pretty big moment for him because whether he wants to be or not, he's part of the crew now and someone the crew actually respects.

Jack: " Darling please know all I've ever wanted from this is for you to be happy. Please come to bed when you're through." Jack has some of the best facial expressions, when Anne brought him into the room with her and Max his face was just straight "O god yes, is a threesome about to go down?" The actor who plays him is great, he hasn't been in a lot of stuff.

Also, Eleanor sounds EXACTLY like Emilia Clarke/Daenerys in Game of Thrones.

Current watch (5/15/24 - 5/21/24):
Episodes: S2, EP4 through EP6

When Flint orders "Fire" on the fort, my jaw dropped. Took the series up a notch for me. Balls to the wall.

There were subtle hints of Flint's relationships with Hamilton up to this point which was brought out into the open. "Shame" and the motives behind Flint's actions going forward.

Mrs. Barlow is still hot as hell.

Narcissistic Eleanor continues her slog. Richard Guthrie's quite the snake, but they seemingly make peace with each other.

Silver continues his fascinating evolution.

Rackham steps up and asserts himself well in his confrontation with the captain of the Goliath. Quick thinking there Captain Jack!!

ooo boy, Anne Bonny is NOT HAPPY!

And the problems that ensue with the return of Billy.

So I just started E4 so this is still a bit of a rehash but...book club and all..

i hated the backstory the first time through. i felt like it was 'filler' taking away from the actual action. this time in true 'book club' mode i am appreciating how the story shaped Flint...it definitely ties in very well to how as Eleanor put it when confronting Mrs Barlow; Flint can savagely murder and deceive his own men then cower like a puppy when visiting her. Without giving away any spoilers; his true nature is definitely exposed bit by bit and nothing about their interactions and his protection of her take away from where he's going. Just a really interesting dynamic there.

The other thing that struck me is just what characters all of the pirates (maybe except for Ned) are. They are, at their heart, men of industry who want nothing more than their little fiefdom to flourish.

what is fascinating is how they have no idea how to do it and descending into chaos constantly is pretty much par for the course. i really do have a newfound appreciation for all of the captains and how in their own way, each of them is trying to help the situation.
