Oh Brother Where Art Thou (upvote)

The Big Lebowski (downvote)

Oh Brother is a movie I should love. I like George Clooney, I love John Goodman, I love Holly hunter. I love historical fiction, particularly set in the south. I love bluegrass and folk music, I own a banjo, two ukes and two acoustic guitars. But the whole movie is discombobulated, it's too cartoonish. "Odysseus!" doesn't do anything for me. Some of the quotable one liners are really forced and don't flow on screen.

The Big Lebowski is a movie I was in the perfect demo for, young adult single male who smoked weed and I love Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, and Steve Buschemi. I was even in a bowling class at UGA as an extracurricular when it came out. But the movie falls flat for me every time I watch it, whether high or sober. It's like a Wes Anderson movie but less gay.

I will throw Fargo in the hat as well

Of the ones I’ve seen:

No Country
O Brother
True Grit
Burn After Reading
Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Bad Santa
Fargo
The Big Lebowski

Fargo is a masterpiece.

A Serious Man has an 89% critics score. It's a nothing burger of a movie. The audience score is a 68% (which is generous). This was a time when Coens just got love for everything they put out....and this movie missed badly but still got ridiculous praise.

I reject the premise of this thread and you should all be ashamed. The Coen Brothers have made a few not great movies, I admit. But The Big Lebowski is not overrated. O Brother is not overrated. Fargo is not overrated. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is not overrated. I’ll stop, but I could name more.

Maybe they’re over “watched.” I’ve seen The Big Lebowski so many times I don’t really seek it out. But it’s like Star Wars. I’ve seen it a million times. Doesn’t mean it’s not great.

I don’t think anyone is overrating The Ladykillers or Intolerable Cruelty.

Lebowski easily. Its not even a top 5 Coens movie much less all time great comedy like some people make it out to be.

And you were right to.

Slow and plodding. Only redeeming quality is a good script.
