Disney CEO Bob Iger says the company is shrinking the MCU with a new mission to drop the number of Marvel TV series to two a year and the film output to no more than three movies per year.

Iger said this is part of Disney’s overall strategy to reduce output and focus on quality, a strategy “that’s particularly true with Marvel.”

“We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three,” the Disney CEO said during the company’s quarterly earnings call Tuesday. “And we’re working hard on what that path is.”

Iger says Marvel has “a couple of good films in ’25 and then we’re heading to more ‘Avengers,’ which we’re extremely excited about,” adding: “Overall, I feel great about the slate. It’s something that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on. The team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing, is second to none.”

quote:

Later in the call, Iger fielded a question about Disney’s focus on sequels and originals, noting that the focus is currently more on franchise films: “We’re gonna balance sequels with originals. Specifically in animation, we had gone through a period where our original films and animation, both Disney and Pixar, were dominating. We’re now swinging back a bit to lean on sequels.”

They should have taken a year or two off after Endgame, let things settle, then carefully "rebuilt" the Universe.

They destroyed themselves, and now it will be a very long path back, if they can even make it back to where they were.

I just don't give a single shite about these movies anymore, and it seems like a lot of people feel the same way.

Getting the XMen in a great film would be a gamechanger

Not quite sure what he's talking about, the MCU has always does three movies a year. The only year they did four was 2021, and that was for obvious reasons.

They should have launched Disney+ before End Game and introduced Captain Marvel and a bunch of the newer characters as tv shows for more End Game set up. The worst part about all their shows is they don’t feel like they are leading anywhere.

I think that's more of just a movie problem in general at this point.

If you look at domestic numbers year by year, the Marvel movies are still about the same.

In 2017 Guardians 2 was 5th, Homecoming 6th, Ragnarok 8th.

In 2018 Ant-Man was 9th (BP and Infinity War were 1 and 2)

In 2019 Captain Marvel was 6th and Far from Home was 7th (Endgame was 1)

In 2021 No Way Home was 1, Shang-Chi was 2, Black Widow was 4 (down year for movies in general, obvious reasons)

In 2022 Wakanda Forever was 3, Doctor Strange 4, Thor 8th

and last year Guardians was 4th and Ant-Man was 8th, and The Marvels was 30th. But I don't think the Marvels is a sign of general fan interest.

All that to say though, I don't know if it's that people don't give a shite, people just don't go to the movies anymore. I mean if you look at the numbers Dune 2 did domestically in 2024 that would have made it the 11th highest grossing movie in 2019. Domestically Dune didn't even make $10M more than The Grinch that came out in 2018.

At this point, it is the quality, not the quantity.

Too late, the MCU has already been ruined for most casuals. My friend group used to see all the movies opening weekend, talk about them etc. We've all been burnt out by overexposure and shite products.

It's not even that it's ruined for me...I just don't care about a single thing they are putting out at all. None of it appeals to me really.

If they brought the OG crew back and made another Avengers movie, I'd definitely see it. But all this new shite with characters I know nothing about and thus don't give a shite about, that doesn't interest me at all. I remember when they marketed their "Phase 4" or whatever it was after Endgame. I laughed out loud at it and how little I knew any of the characters, and how little people would give a shite about it. And that was even before they saturated the market with shows that nobody asked for, which not only saturated it even more but also actively turned people off of their product because the quality was so shitty.

On top of all of that is the fact that I don't go to theaters much anymore. But a large reason for that is motivation...there isn't much I ever want to see in theaters anymore. If the quality was higher, I'd be more inclined to go.

Agreed.

Loki should have a big impact on the MCU, but aside from Deadpool and Wolverine I don't know if it will (though that could be huge).

Most of the others have nearly zero impact at all. They might as well be the Netflix Marvel shows in how little they interact with the movies (Daredevil's cameo in No Way Home not withstanding).

What If...? is probably the only show where people fully expect it to NOT have anything to do with the movies.

I think losing Iron Man and Captain America hurt.

They were driving the Avengers story line. Also RDJ’s willingness to do the roll a million times to tie everything together.

SpiderMan will almost always out butts in the seats.

Thor, BB2 and Guardians made good money. (760m, 859m and 845m) they expectations that every single
Marvel movie should make a billion dollars is really why these movies are perceived as unsuccessful.

Dr Strange also made just under a billion. It's really antman and the Marvels that tanked, but things aren't as bleak as people make it seem. Most studios will kill for these types of numbers.

Everything just seems so disjointed, in the Infinity Saga you could feel all the connections regardless of the movies. But now it just seems almost serialized, no crossovers, just introduce a new hero then onto to the next one.

Still probably too many TBH but at least they are realizing that there is a fricking flood of material to where the quality isn’t standing up.

No offense meant, Professor X.

I don’t think the grosses are the problem near as much as the net.

These movies keep getting more and more expensive to lesser grosses, which means your net significantly decreases.

this ^^^^^^^^^

and i would add that killing off black widow killed off a great place they could go with expanding her character.

the most watched and wanted heros were all removed, they went all girl power rules the world, and killed off the only likeable female audiences cared about in black widow, all because she wasnt girly enough for the simps, and now they wonder why nobody cares about marvel movies any more
