L.A. is a town with multiple sports team given its population. Overall, not sure I would call it a sports crazy town.

New Orleans metro population is 1.27 million and not growing.

For perspective that is only about 3 times the size of Green Bay.

350k less than Milwaukee.

Half the size of Sacramento.

No reason to even talk about big cities. NOLA isn’t one.

The real question is why the NBA went back there.

It would be a real shame if the Saints left.

People in New Orleans care about their teams a great deal. There is real passion.

It’s just a small, poor city

No one in LA gives a singular frick but they have 10x the population and 1000x the money

Saints/Pels are regional teams. Yes Nola’s metro is 1.3 million, but when you factor in Baton Rouge, The bayou parishes, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the population is well over 2 million. Economically, this area can compete and exceed many of the other smaller markets in the NFL and NBA
The teams are supported just fine.

LA

I lived in the LA area for a few years. I think it’s not really a sports town at all. Yes it has pro teams from every sport, but none really cares. It’s a frontrunner town.

The truth is, we will never get the chance to be a ‘sports town’ because anytime New Orleans get something nice that, the thugs have to ruin it for everybody

We are getting something like top golf soon, let’s see how long that lasts. I say under two years

This is a troll-arse question, BUT forcing people to deal with Cox or AT&T if they want to watch the Pelicans on TV isn't helping the matter.

Also, compared to other major metro areas, its supports USC and UCLA to a decent degree

Not really. They got behind USC when they had great teams and were winning titles, otherwise not so much.
I went to several UCLA games when I was there (lived in Pasadena). Always amazed at just how empty the stadium was even for conference games.

All of the real fans have been shot and killed trying to park near the Superdome.

Saints attendance:

2023-24 -12th
2022-23 - 15th (96.1%)
2021-22 - 22nd (94.9%)
2020-21 - COVID
2019-20 - 7th (100.1%)

Saints have generally always been supported locally.

Pelicans attendance:

2023-24 - 24th
2022-23 - 26th (99.4%)
2021-22 - 25th (92.0%)
2020-21 - COVID
2019-20 - 23rd (97.9%)

Pelicans suffer from one of the smallest arenas in the NBA and having one of the worst front offices in the NBA.

Pels have squandered 3 generational players in CP3, AD, and Zion and whenever it seems like the Pels are about to get over that fan momentum hump, something catastrophic happens.

CP3 - team has no owner and CP3 requests trade.

AD - team looking on the up and up and then Boogie Cousins blows out his achilles. Team then falls apart and AD requests trade.

Zion - finally looking good and healthy and then suffers injury and doesn't play in the playoffs again and Pels on verge of getting swept after 2 blowout losses.

Fans have just been beat down over and over by the Pels and growing tired.

1. Still small market
2. Are people coming from BR and MS on a regular basis for Pelicans games? Doubtful. Saints are different.

the Saints are supported just fine.

There aren’t many regional basketball teams that compete with an NFL team well.

People aren’t driving from BR and Bay St. louis regularly on a tuesday night.

Yes there is a good many of us who travel from the coast to catch a Pels game, some charter bus companies make pretty damn good money taking fans to saints/Pels game from Jackson MS/Coast Area using I-10/I-55 during the season.

1. And? Compared to other small markets, Nola is competitive.
2. Yes, they do. Winning would draw even more.
Pels suffer from shite management. Even locals in Nola can’t watch the games without some stupid app.
Why wouldn’t a winning team draw fans from those areas?
No different than other larger metros (geographically speaking).

LA is definitely not a sports town. They’ve lost more pro franchises than any other city

Not to watch a team with a sub .500 home record.

Winning cures everything

Suffer? They aren’t selling it out now. I would say it’s too big.

The pelicans are top half of the league in attendance percentage. Why do people act like fans don’t go to pelicans games?
