They suck now and haven’t been too good in a while. Used to be essentially an Omaha lock growing up

Same thing that happened to the Lady Techsters.

Can’t compete with big money programs.

Things change.

They won a national championship since he left. They are just not having a good year. I wouldn’t say the money has anything to do with it, but if college baseball goes to full scholarships for all players, it will not be advantageous to them.

California college baseball is more or less dead. Basically the only one of the small schools that used to be good still playing well is UCI. UCLA, USC, Cal, and Stanford are all terrible.

It’s hard to recruit against these bigger programs in the sec/acc who have invested in facilities.

Look how many California players are on SEC rosters, and starting. You maybe had 1 or 2 cali guys per school a few years ago now it’s multiple.

And they’ve fallen from power in the 11.7 era.

I think youth baseball and travel ball outside of California also changed the landscape. You used to hear stories about California producing so much talent because they could and did play year round.

Even in the South, kids would only play on their local little league team for a couple of months.

Youth ball, travel ball, and even high school baseball is much bigger in ACC and SEC country than in was in the 80’s. Combine that with the facilities of bigger college programs, and the advantages of programs like Fullerton have disappeared.

If teams are able to offer 32 full scholarships, then that would cull the Fullerton types. They would be regulated to "FCS" in baseball.

Fullerton, Long Beach State, UC-Irvine, and other schools like that being able to offer a full ride would be able to curb some of the housing struggles these players find when trying to find housing in California.

In some cases it’s cheaper for the California kid to go out of state than it is to stay and play in California
