Cousins give you a better chance to win at least this season and next.

Then take a more “win now” player. Cousins is old and the front office is on its last leg.

Having to go “all in” now isn’t the case anymore because you have Penix waiting in the wings. Again, if you think taking a guy like Dallas Turner instead is going to put you over the top then sure take Dallas Turner, but that seems unlikely.

It wouldn’t have been shocking to see Penix go over Maye. Kurt Warner said he liked Penix more than Maye and I’m sure a lot of NFL decision makers agree.

Did you not have access to any pre draft coverage? Him going at 8’was a HUGE shock. If the Falcons signed Cousins with all that guaranteed money but were locked in on Penix and didn’t think he’d be there at 8, they are even more incompetent than they look now.

I get you like Penix and that’s cool but there is no defense of these 2 moves. You are completely ignoring the salary cap.

We can nit pick the fact Cousins’ has a 3 or 4 year contract and not a 1 or 2 year contract

It's 3 years, with 2 guaranteed and the 4th year is a dummy year.

So it's essentially a 2 year deal w/an option for a 3rd.

He played QB in the NFL, was an MVP, won a SB and nearly won 2 more. He knows the position. Definitely a lot more than any of us on here.

ETA: Warner is also a film rat.

There is that theory.... That the front office was drafting to buy them more employment years....oh, Cousins is getting old or isn't working out? Wait till we put Pennix in! And draft stud receivers.

I dont think the falcons defense should be ‘see other teams have made crappy qb selections early in the draft’ Just a totally indefensible pick after signing cousins

This. The reaction to the pick has nothing at all to do with Penix as a player.
It’s that they picked him immediately after paying Cojsins huge money and still have glaring needs, particularly on defense.

They just signed a QB and could have had their pick of any of the top defensive players in the draft. Instead went with another QB.

Yes I’m aware of Warner’s resume but since he not GM of a team picking in the top 7 he wasn’t in a position to draft Penix before the Falcons pick at 8 now was he?

Too many posters here including you and the OP are arguing about how you view Penix as a player or prospect. The idea that Atlanta signed Cousins because they weren’t sure Penix would be there at 8 is laughably stupid. He wasn’t going to be there in the 2nd round but there was no question he’d be there at 8 despite Kurt Warner’s ranking. There is no defense for the Falcons signing Cousins and then taking Penix at 8, none

Even without the massive injury concerns, Murray and Mayfield were better prospects than Penix

His value will never be higher than it was when they called his name and picked him at 8. If they offered him up to every team in the league right now, I don't believe they would get more than a 2025 second round pick for him. They damn sure wouldn't get a 2025 top 10 pick.

Wilson was pretty highly regarded IIRC. I’d say Murray and Baker also more highly regarded at draft time. Can’t really remember on Wentz.

Falcons got a 1st rounder for Favre (who was picked in the 2nd round) and I think he only took 1 snap in his one season in Atlanta.

Maybe the Falcons want to trade for veterans....

And not just draft picks.

If they were going to trade for a veteran, don't you think they'd have traded the pick on or before Thursday night so the receiving team could make their own decision with the draft pick?

They aren't trading Penix. The front office is absolutely smitten over him to the point where they apparently think they can pay him $60M/year and still win with him. The ONLY way this pick works is if Penix becomes some mashup combo of Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, and Vick. They seem to think he is so good that they don't need to take advantage of his rookie contract years to put a roster around him.

In other words, this has a .000000001% chance of working. There is a better chance of 6th round WR Casey Washington working out than there is of this pick working out. The word value apparently does not exist in Terry Fontenot's used car salesman lexicon.

The QB turnover attrition in the NFL is at an all-time high, nobody can find their guy.

Teams will pay a ransom down the road if their guy is not working out, especially if they get Penix on his rookie contract.

Everyone on here thought Penix was the best QB in the draft after he beat Texas.

Then he loses the National Championship game and suddenly he's overrated. The Falcons probably got the best QB in the draft which is a valuable commodity that they can do what they want with.

I think him and Caleb will be the best 2 QB's out of this class.
