Merril Hoge sees Drake Maye as “the kind of player that will get you fired”

Chris Simms has placed Maye at No. 6 in his quarterback rankings, behind Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr., and J.J. McCarthy.

Former ESPN analyst and NFL fullback Merril Hoge has similar views on Maye.

Via AthlonSports.com, Hoge recently said the Maye could cost whoever drafts him their job.

“Drake Maye is the kind of player that will get you fired,” Hoge said in an interview on WCCO radio. “Especially if you draft him in the top five or top three, he’s going to get you fired.”

Hoge compared Maye to 2021 rookie Malik Willis, who had been the betting favorite to be the first quarterback taken and who ended up falling to the Titans in round three. At best, he’ll be No. 2 in Tennessee this year.

“Willis might be the only guy that I can think of that is as erratic as Maye,” Hoge said. “I studied him for two years. . . . I watched every one of his games last year. . . . His last game against [North Carolina State] was probably the most embarrassing display I’ve seen from a guy who is supposed to be an elite franchise quarterback. . . . He’s erratic. He’s everywhere.”

Hoge also has concerns about Maye’s ability to use his athleticism in a way that will keep him healthy.

“People think his athleticism will translate but people want him to run and they will bust him up,” Hoge said. “He is not athletic enough. If he doesn’t get down and learn how to do that, he won’t last until Week 10.”

Hoge also isn’t particularly impressed with Caleb Williams.

quote:

"First of all, his ability to throw on the run is very disturbing," Hoge said. "It is very inaccurate and it's all over the place. There's a ton of RPO, which nobody is going to RPO themselves to a Super Bowl in our league. ... You gotta push the ball down the field. There are times when he does that. He doesn't play with a lot of anticipation because of all the clean pockets that exist for him.

"The thing that's disturbing me right now is his inability to be consistent on the move as a thrower. And he's willing to do that a lot more than he has to. You don't have that choice in our league. ... I don't see anything magical with his arm.

"From a pocket presence, he is not special," Hoge said. "He has a gift that everybody thinks is exciting and special and that is his unique mobility. That's not going to win you championships and being exciting is not a skillset."

Hoge has had some pretty good QB Draft analysis over the past few years. He has been spot on with a few as I recall

Yep, and he's not the only one that's questioning Maye.

Couldn't agree more. Maye is absolute pyrite. He'll bust.

Maye's output never matched his hype. He may be a robo QB.

Maye Caleb and Daniels all have a bit of bust potential to each.

Pointing out his inconsistency, his lack of accuracy is a strong point.

Pretending he doesn't have elite arm talent is a strange point to make.

Something about Maye has resulted in him performing below where you would expect him to for significant periods of time. Some games don't make sense.

But, I'd draft him 3rd. I wouldn't even consider Penix or Nix before him.

I do agree that there's risk with this pick.

People are going to clown him, but Hoge lives on tape and is usually able to divorce himself from the draft hype bullshite generated by agents and the media.

I think he's saying that just having a strong arm and poor accuracy makes his arm talent not elite, just his arm strength. Brandon Harris had elite arm strength too and no one said he had elite arm talent (not saying he's Brandon Harris).

Maye seems like the prototype QB that has the measurable but not the in game results. Seems like those guys are always drafted highly but usually bust with the exception of Josh Allen who still took a while to get good.

I think he has elite arm talent. Decision making, trying to do too much while on the run, inability to anticipate throws are all things that could sink him which have nothing to do with arm talent.

Now, if he constantly missing targets while being on platform, fair enough. But, I don't see that. I see a guy that can make all of the throws...not only the strong arm ones.

I'm not arguing either point, as truthfully I haven't watched enough Caleb to make an informed opinion. I'm just translating Hoge's point.

Would be interesting if someone has a list of all the top 5 QBs the last 3-5 years and what he said.

I know he liked Stroud more than Young.

quote:

“You take Bryce Young into that pocket-collapsing environment, he doesn’t have a big enough arm so he’s limited in where he’s going to be able to throw, and he’s not the same quarterback (as Stroud). He can’t make those throws,” Hoge said. “That’s going to be a big consistency in the National Football League. He doesn’t play like CJ Stroud does. I still love him, I still think he does a great job. I think he can be a good quarterback. I wouldn’t put a first-round pick on him because that expectation is you’re going to be elite, you’re going to take us to a championship.

“And you have to have this as part of your evaluation: he is fragile. He is not very big. And he’s already displayed that. The year where they were dominant and he won the Heisman Trophy, they were a dominant team and he was awesome. When they weren’t quite the team they were the previous year, people got to hit him, people got around him more, and he didn’t play the entire season. He got hurt because you hit him. … In our league, he’s gonna get hit. He’s not physically… He’s very fragile, and you have to be OK with him not playing a few games every year. You have to accept that could happen. And then with his limited ability to throw from a dirty pocket in an NFL environment, CJ Stroud doesn’t have those things. If I have the choice, I’m gonna take the guy who doesn’t put those limitations on me.”

I see he has inherited the Chris Simms “he was right on a couple QBs that must mean he knows whose gonna be good” franchise tag from this board

The dirty secret is we are all guessing. Agents, media, teams, players, fans, etc. there’s a laundry list of factors and situations that lead to success vs failure and most of those are completely immeasurable. Anyone speaking with conviction on any of these QBs like this, is only asking to eventually look silly. But you take enough swings and you’ll have enough to cherry pick yourself into being a QB expert

It’s pre draft. People want to hear and believe what they already think. Great content for Hoge to feed right into that

You can find other draft guys doing the same type of analysis for the other top guys on the board. They are all making their dart throws

His rant about Johnny Football was dead accurate leading up to the 2014 draft. I remember him saying that he didn’t like Zach Wilson as well on the radio during his draft process.

Yes he has. Very good QB evaluator. Apparently he only looks at throws with a congested pocket to see how every QB handles that because so many nfl throws are from a collapsing pocket.

He was spot on about Tebow, Manziel, etc.
