Iowa Gambling Authorities Launch Investigation Against Hawkeyes Baseball

On Monday, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission told the Action Network it has launched an investigation into the University of Iowa’s baseball team after players were suspended for the team’s series against Ohio State this past weekend.
The email from Iowa’s gaming commission came on the heels of the university announcing on Friday that they withheld “some student-athletes” from its upcoming games “due to a potential violation.”
Sam Basler, the assistant director of communications for Iowa’s athletic department, did not respond when asked if the suspensions pertained to gambling.
Steve Roe, the athletic department’s communications director, told the Action Network “we don’t have anything further at this time.”
“The commission takes the integrity of gaming in the state seriously and is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide any additional information when able,” said Brian Ohorilko, the director of gaming for the state’s commission.
Four players weren’t present this weekend for Hawkeye baseball games, On3Sports’ Kyle Heusmann reported. Two of those players — infielder Keaton Anthony and relief pitcher Jacob Henderson — stood out as ones who regularly play.
Anthony leads the team in on base percentage, batting average, slugging percentage and OPS. Henderson last pitched on May 2 vs. Illinois State — the Hawkeyes’ previous game.

Wow!
And this one involves players.
Hopefully they weren't betting on their own team

Maybe opening up betting on a niche sport like college baseball was a bad idea.

I guess we should take this seriously this time

Not a whole lot really released besides that acknowledged tweet and the players being held out... Rumors so far are they did not bet on baseball and or the Iowa baseball team.

Yeah, they’re not allowed to gamble at all. Didn’t Rick Neuheisal get banged for being in an NCAA tourney pool?

Who could have imagined this might happen when ESPN or Fox broadcasts and every freaking podcast bombards you with Draftkings and FanDuel ads??

Yeah, they’re not allowed to gamble at all.
One of the rights of passage for any college student is putting in hail mary parlays 5 mins before the games start

The argument against widespread legalization of sports gambling was the potential the players/coaches could be compromised. The fact the pros make so much money somewhat minimizes the risk they could be compromised (though you had a guy like Ridley get suspended for betting) but college guys, especially baseball players, don't make that much. If you are a college baseball player you have greater inside access to the team than any "sharp" or handicapper. So if you can use that information for potentially significant personal gain it may be hard to turn that down. And with betting being available in many states now from the convenience of your phone, all you need is a buddy with a gambling account who will be willing to discreetly "partner" with you to make bets on your behalf.
That's why I think you are going to see some states consider banning gambling on college sports. Ideally, they would just ban gambling on everything except football and basketball. But it would be hard to justify banning everything else but those sports because then you would be flat out admitting your willing to accept a risk of compromise of some college sports...as long as they make the state a lot of money (through taxes)

It feels weird to have sources...but I think I may have heard some info about this. Nothing specific on the bets, but the names I'm hearing are
Keaton Anthony
Ethan Blom
Arland Bruce
Again nothing solid from my "source" though they made reference to rumors that some of the guys used family members' SSNs to sign up for their betting accounts.

Probably average more points per game than their football team.

I’m sure we’re tied to it somehow

this is exactly why fanduel and draftkings removed college baseball over/under and spread betting early in the season.
now all they offer is moneyline bets to minimize the risk of collusion. it's easier to manipulate total runs and the spread than it is to make your team win or lose a game unless you are the starting pitcher

I'm not 100% sure if that is still the rule with NIL but yea, when I was in school athletes couldn't even bet on doing a load of laundry for someone else

Was anyone betting on those lines? People who knew what to bet were probably cleaning up

Exactly… most college baseball players aren’t on full scholarships… the incentive to use or sell inside info is strong.

yes. they was a big controversy because LSU 10 run ruled someone and they voided the bets since the game didn't go a full 9 innings.
