I'll start with Game 1 of the 2021 NBA Finals.

In 1968, the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns both entered the NBA. Each finishing at the bottom of their respective conferences, they had a coin flip to determine who would win the #1 overall pick. The Bucks won, selecting Lew Alcindor #1, later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He led them to the 1971 NBA championship and three years later, had them within one win of another. Now, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks, in their third year of title contention, have finally broken through and returned to the NBA Finals. Exactly a week ago, Antetokounmpo suffered a knee injury that looked at the time to be not only season-ending, but career-altering. He’s suiting up tonight.

As for the Suns, despite being one of the winningest franchises in league history, they’re still searching for their first championship. Their defeats have often been dramatic (clip of Paxson shot) and sometimes, controversial (clip of Horry hip check). In a trade during the offseason, the Suns acquired Chris Paul, an 11-time All-Star and arguably the greatest floor general of his generation. In his 16th season, this is his first NBA Final. Devin Booker, in his playoff debut, has further cemented his All-Star credentials, averaging 27 points in 16 playoff games. For the Suns, not only is this their first playoff appearance in just over a decade, but their first trip to the Finals since 1993.

The Bucks, aiming for their first championship in a half-century. The Suns, aiming for their first ever. Who will draw first blood? Game 1, next.
