Updated with BSC now in the D3 MCWS

OP from when they won the regional to advance to the supers:

BSC Athletics

The Birmingham-Southern baseball team went to Lexington, Kent. for a NCAA D3 Regional... and won the thing

With the school slated to officially shut its doors for good on May 31st... the Panthers now head to Ohio for a Super Regional series this weekend.

Should BSC win there to advance to the D3 CWS... they will be representing a school that doesn't exist anymore

Kind of an awkward position to be in... trying to win a national championship for a program that's technically already dead

If they make it to the WS, who is paying their travel, hotels, etc?

I would imagine it's all part of the current fiscal year... so it'll all still be the same as it's been the whole year

Maybe the booster group helps to make it a truly memorable last ride

If a D3 team makes it to Omaha, they're fricking lost.

I'm sure the current head coach would love to parade it around to whatever job interviews he has after the run ends

Perhaps they shouldn't having been wasting money on meaningless low-level college athletics.

Sad ending for the school but it should make for a decent inspirational Disney sports movie in 10-15 years.

The Bank that will take possession of the school property.

It’s a sad story really. They hired a president that mismanaged a lot funds and spent like crazy. It put them in the hole and they haven’t been able to recover. The legislature passed a distressed college loan program just to save the school but the state treasurer is a douche and after leading them on for several months, denied the loan. By that time, it was too late to save the 160 year old school.

It was the right call by the Treasurer.

He prevented what would have been yet another slow bleed that wouldn't have prevented the school closing in 5 - 7 years, anyway.

National and Alabama Gen Z demographics, neighborhood dynamics, the scarlet letter it already had as a doomed school, etc., etc.

There are way too many small, private schools in the South, Northeast, and Midwest that are on the brink right now or will be very soon. Don't throw good money after bad with public dollars.

The difference is, Disney will tell you that them winning after the school shutdown motivated the administration to reopen.

No one will miss Birmingham southern. It was mismanaged and had around 400 students. They had no business getting any funds from the state. The UMC should have saved them if anyone.

I’m not going to disagree too much. It’s their own fault they got into the mess. They had 1200+ students and were arguably the best school in Alabama about 20 years ago but couldn’t keep up with other schools. Didn’t help that they’re located in the worst part of the City.

Not in favor of state bailouts but the state spends a lot of money on some really wasteful projects like whitewater parks and such, so not offering a loan (which was earmarked for this very situation) was silly. Intentionally dragging out the process so they were left with alternative was a shite move too.

Nicely written story on their website. Hopefully someone buys this nice historic campus soon before it begins to deteriorate.
