Seems like a good way to invest if you have the extra money to do so?

What are we investing in? The insurance salesman?

Don't mix insurance and investments

Explain the product to an 8th grader in three sentences or less.

Complex products are never something I'm interested in "investing" in.

Over fund a life insurance policy for guaranteed gains that can be withdrawn tax free later in life.

No, always buy term and invest the difference. Any form of whole life is a rip off.

Besides the complex structure, high fees, capped gains, and pay or lose it?

Guessing the insurance rep is selling you on "guaranteed returns"

Term or whole life, universal life is a horrible product.

Your "investment" is being bled by the cost of a potentially permanent life insurance policy.

No gains for 6+ years while the insurance company subsidizes the cost to produce the policy for you (aka opportunity cost).

Someone at some time may feel like they came out ahead (i.e. they didn't have any life insurance already, they were going to buy an extended term or permanent life insurance policy anyway, and the guarantee is good enough to offset the horrible time value of money horizon at origination for any other market driven investment opportunity which most certainly would outperform the guaranty due to the extended duration of the plan).

Permanent life insurance is not an investment product. It is insurance and should be used with that in mind.

Show me paper how this is a winning strategy.

First you show us all why it isn’t a winning strategy. That way we can decipher which elementary grade level we need to dumb the proof of why it is a winning strategy down to.

99% of the time term is going to be better than permanent insurance. Few people actually have a permanent need for life insurance. If your first thought is “that’s stupid because we’re all definitely going to die” then you’re approaching the entire conversation from a flawed mindset.

Dumb it down or make it as complicated as you want. Show on paper how it's a winning strategy. You see "buy term invest the rest" said a lot. A. L. William's coined the phrase but I have never seen it shown that it actually works. So have at it.
