Why does Jay hate Helmers?

He didn’t pitch at all last year… He seems to have a quirky right handed arm delivery and throws in the low to mid 90s. He has a sub one ERA. But Jay continues to trout out left-handers with a five or six ERA. He almost did the same thing to Edwards last year it seemed until Edwards proved him wrong, and gave him some great innings until he blew out his arm. Then Jay was devastated to lose Edwards, when he seemed to not be in his plans to begin with…now it’s Helmers

But he leaves Ackenhousen in there against righty and lefty hitters but pulls Helmers after one batter?…

That's new. He's developed kind of a Louis Coleman delivery. He's only pitched 9 innings and he's been more effective than probably anyone expected.
But, hell, he was pitching in a 1 run game on Saturday of an SEC series. That says something. I think he's going to continue to get more opportunities.
I don't think you should expect too much though. If he ends up being a RH arm that can give us an inning on the weekend, it's a nice surprise.

Boosie, do you think Helmers is as good a pitcher as Ackenhausen? Helmers is a good guy, but he is not good enough for an LSU scholarship. With his stuff, he’d have to be 5 mph faster to get a look nowadays. He’s a holdover from when Mainieri wasn’t putting any effort into recruiting.
As for Helmer’s 1 era? That’s just not representative. He has probably been used mostly against midweek hitters and in such short stints that it’s hard to give up an earned run. It’s a stat of limited usefulness. At the very least it should only be considered for pitchers who enter innings with no outs.

Jay is stuck in the past with the pitchers who performed well in Omaha but have sucked this year. Hurd, Ack, & Guidry. He will die on that hill and LSU will miss the NCAA tournament because of it.

Hellmers is on his third pitching coach in four years.
The 3/4 to side arm delivery is new and they began working on it last year, but reverted back to his normal delivery for a bit, and he was slightly injured near the end of the season.
His new delivery give better movement to his slider which he worked on over the fall.
Finally, he has been used in a few leverage situations in SEC games, so Yeskie and JJ obviously like him for matchups.
Its not that hard to figure out.

The only reason i can think as to why he was pulled yesterday is because he was exhausted from throwing 145 pitches in the bullpen over 24 hours
