This is why it’s important to control your emotions as a Pitcher.

I know it’s fun to have a guy show his true grit and belly fire but what happened to Herring in the 9th could have been better managed if he would have been able to temper his energy.
Would not have had the hit batter along with at least one of the walks.
In hindsight, Milazzo should have made a much better throw to first and also could have had better effort from Jones receiving a shitty throw, but Herring got them in that spot.
It’s was an ultimate collapse from a team that just couldn’t afford it and needed 2/3 from both series over the next 2 series.
That game should never have been lost against an ok team.
Could have been the nail.
Let’s see how the team responds tomorrow.

No one is admitting that the ball was hit in a tough spot for both pitcher and catcher. Ideally the pitcher charges forward and catcher stays home and pitcher tosses it home for the out but the catcher has to make an effort for the ball there, eliminating that play.

If the pitcher gets there first, that is a really tough play for a lefty to make. It is low percentage. Simultaneously it is tough for the catcher to run with full gear to a ball moving towards the pitcher, pivot, and make an accurate throw with a runner moving down the line.

You are correct. Herring had a bit of a meltdown to load the bases and put them in a position where a wacky play could lose them the game. He needs to be nails there and he was not.

You can control your emotions all you want when you simply choke. That is the emotion.

Agree, it’s like the baseball gods place that ball exactly where it would be the toughest play for a left-handed pitcher and a catcher having to move so far out for it

It’s just a weak minded team with low motivation. They thought they were kings in the offseason and now they’re exposed as chumps. Hopefully we can salvage some real ball players off this team for next year.

The hit batter was because he did that stupid thing where pitchers look to check the base runner, and then turn to immediately pitch. It’s impossible to aim properly when you’re turning on a dime from second base

( now they’re exposed as chumps.)

Which includes a lot of 'chumps' posting here!

I didn't realize the play was at home. That was the play. Thanks for pointing that out

After he had the strikeout when the count was against him at 3-1 he went all Hess and Wild Thing and once it went south he could no longer manage the situation the way we needed.
Very unfortunate

They could have done anything besides what they did and have a chance to win.

1. Catcher stays home, pitcher tries for a force out at home. Bang bang play, goes to review. Worst case, tie ballgame.

2. Pitcher gets the ball, throws to first. Gets the out or not. Worst case scenario, tie ballgame.

3. Catcher charges, gets ball before pitcher. Makes a good throw, bang bang play. Worst case scenario tie ballgame.

The only thing you cannot do is throw the ball to the outfield.

I loved that Jay trusted and kept Herring in after he got himself in trouble. Best reliever we have you have to trust it.

I do wish that he would have taken a visit after the second batter was walked and you could see his emotions start to spiral a bit. Then the hit batter, then you know the rest.

Milazzo should’ve let Herring make the routine play instead of waving him off.

In that particular situation I trusted our elite catcher to make the throw way more than an amped up Hess, I mean Herring.

Just didn’t work out.
Kinda like the whole season to date.

The ump was also calling a tight arse zone.
Herring had a pitch right down the middle that was called a ball.
I dont blame the loss on Herring.
He made the pitches to win the game.
