What is his ceiling here? Can he be a threat similar to Burrow or is he strictly a pocket passer?

He has quick-twitch ability, and it looks like his quick feet would lead to success scrambling, but he hasn't shown it.

I haven't seen Nuss' mind catch up to the game. He has not shown that calm mastery of the pocket that Jayden and Burrow showed. But hey, those guys have Heisman trophies.

We haven’t seen enough of him in a real game with starters to know.

I’m just curious is running could be part of his game. I know he won’t be JD or anywhere close but if he can just be threat like Burrow then it opens up so much more on offense.

It wasn't until year 2 that either showed that. Daniels even started the year still skiddish.

He scrambles or moves in the pocket for receivers to uncover. He will rarely run for yardage, but he may take off if a play completely breaks down or there is a clear open space. In the last 2 seasons he's attempted 117 passes and been sacked once.

From his recruiting profile. It's actually pretty accurate.

quote:

Adequate height with an average frame. Should be able to get north of 200 pounds. Provides outstanding production against strong competition at Texas 6A level. Accurate passer to all levels. Shows good touch on timing routes and other deep throws outside the numbers. Flashes playmaking ability to make impressive off-schedule throws under pressure. That translates not only in game situations, but select 7-on-7 environments as well. Pro-style but quick-footed and shows ability to make first rusher miss to extend play. Encouraging ability to throw on the run. Physical ceiling may be limited. Ball gets out fairly quickly, but tightening the delivery will help. Occasionally takes unnecessary chances. Talented QB with gunslinger mentality and great football pedigree. Among the top Texas QB's in 2021 class. Projects to high-major level with possibility for long-term NFL Draft potential.

He’s shown he can extend plays. Probably would be more like Burrow. Guess we’ll see in bowl game what he can do with #1 unit.

A guy posted a gif of his in the pocket mobility. It looked a lot like JB. He eluded first defender, set up 2nd defender to miss, and threw a bomb for a TD. If Sloan and Denbrock can get him zoned in, the kid won’t disappoint us.

I wouldn’t think he is as mobile as Burrow, but he’s no Myles Brennan statue in the pocket. He has escapability and could probably pick you up 4-5 yards on a 3rd down if need be. We also haven’t seen Nuss in an offense tailored to use his strengths to the best of his ability either. I am nervous about his inconsistency more than anything, but I’m hoping that gets better with more reps

It took both of those guys a full year of starting in the SEC before the light came on.

Hes always been mobile but hes not going to be someone who gets consistent QB runs called. He is elusive to escape pressure keep his eyes down field and deliver an off scripted play. He could be used for 1 zone read pull or QB draw a game in the right situation but he is not a sitting duck, hes mobile just not a true "Dual threat."

I don't think people remember Burrow's first season as a starter.

Burrow completed 57% of his passes on the season. His first 3 games vs Miami, SELA and Auburn he was averaging under 50% completions. He also had a 4 game stretch with 0 TDs vs 4 INTs and a pick six to end any chance to beat Florida. It wasn't until the last 4 games of the season that Burrow started to evolve into the future Heisman QB.
That was also with Jefferson, Chase, Marshall and CEH on the team, but they all hit another gear in 2019.

I don't think Nuss struggles that much early on, but I do think he will have growing pains as a first time starter.

Reminds me of a Flynn or Mauck. Not as much of a threat to run as Burrow, but athletic enough to pick up yards.

He will run to extend plays if he has to. More like Burrow. LSU will have a great running game next year with the studs we have in the backfield. So it will not be a throw first offense. LSU will run more next year. We have a great RB room. It is time for them to shine behind this great OL we have and deep also.

Have y’all not watched him when he’s played? He has great escapability in the pocket but keeps looking downfield to launch the ball instead of running it himself

this is correct. Garrett does a great job of escaping while keeping eyes down the field.
