Lingering question: Who will play defensive tackle?

The Tigers have two glaring holes on the interior defensive line after Mekhi Wingo and Maason Smith departed for the NFL. Veteran Jacobian Guillory will probably start at one spot after totaling 51 tackles and 0.5 sack in 39 games. Converted offensive lineman Kimo Makane'ole and Florida transfer Jalen Lee were working at the other spot during the spring.

Incoming freshman Dominick McKinley might provide some help this season, but the Tigers were still looking to add at least one more tackle via the transfer portal. Defensive end Ahmad Breaux moved inside to help in the spring. LSU missed out on a couple of big transfer targets in Damonic Williams (TCU to Oklahoma) and Simeon Barrow Jr. (Michigan State to Miami).

Love how they don't mention Paea and yes a DT would've been nice. Given the young players the position change players. I'm willing to bet Kelly only wanted to go after Blidi and Barrow. Obviously they didn't commit but what Williams did was definitely not worth 1.5m even if depth concerns. I know our DT situation isn't good but Bo is definitely gonna earn his pay this summer in getting these guys ready.

The 2024 DTs will be as bad as the 2023 DBs

LSU has 8 listed DTs on the current roster:

Guillory
Lee
Washington
Breaux
McKinley
De'Myrion Johnson
Makene'ole
Paez

So the narrative that they have "no one" is false. They have bodies. Now, if you want to say there are big question marks as to how productive that group will be I think all would agree.

But this isn't the first time LSU has been in this spot. In 2014 LSU started the season in arguably a worse situation. They were left playing Christian Lacatoure and true freshman, Davon Godchaux pretty much all game early in the season. Not surprisingly, things didn't go well early on. Most notably Dak Prescott and Co. running all over LSU. However, as the season went on LSU's defense got better. What started out as a disaster ended with LSU being a top 15 defense.

Now, I'm not saying LSU will ever reach that point this season. Namely because there are other personnel holes on the roster. But the absolute panic by some just because LSU didn't sign an average transfer DT is absurd. Sure it would have been nice to get one of those guys. But I'm pretty confident in saying it wouldn't have been the difference between a championship season and a poor season. It's not like LSU swung and missed on Glenn Dorsey, Aaron Donald or Ndamukong Suh

Fall camp we will know where we are at on defense....I think they should swap out a DT for a LB and put wheeks on the field and get creative on stopping the run unless a DT or 2 turns into absolute Dawgs over the summer

it's the problem with NIL
if you pay all these transfers to come in and upset your depth chart and you pay them more then you did McKinley it upsets the apple cart
it's definitely a fine line you have to walk

Literally. We need him to eat a lot and put on weight so he can be a force his sophomore year.

If McKinley has to play significant minutes this fall, it means we are in serious trouble on the interior DL. VERY few true freshmen play and play well at DL/OL in the SEC.

Someone should remind Kelly that he will never win anything of significance without a dominant DL in the SEC. And that’s not just good, but dominant.

Hard to believe this is where we are in year 3.
