Former Tiger great Malcolm Scott is living under an overpass.

The end of this article caught me by surprise.

On Thursday, Malcolm Scott, a hulking 52-year-old with arms like tree trunks, beckoned a reporter over to where he sat nibbling on a donated ham sandwich.
A former football standout for LSU, Scott played two seasons as a tight end in the NFL before getting injured.
He said he’s working an occasional construction job for minimum wage, while spending his nights at shelters.
“I’ll stay at the mission for 21 days, the Oz for 14 days, then maybe with a girl until she kicks me out,” he said. “I’ve been stuck here for a long time.”
“The TV stations almost did a story on me,” he added. “If you write about me, make sure you mention I’m an LSU Tiger.”

Any reason he couldn't get a job at McDonalds or Burger King? Would provide him a steady check and he could at least get a place to put his head at night...

Well that's sad...hope he can get his life on track

Malcolm was a good receiving tight end. He was on the 1981 Orange Bowl team.

no photo ID, no address, no SSN, no job, no hope
plus most of those guys are too incapacitated to work a regular job

maybe L club can help out

I think laziness is the medical term for it.

How does he not have a SSN? Everyone has a SSN.

no photo ID
Anyone can get one of these. Doesn't have to be a driver's license.

no address
At some point he had to have one of these as well.

no hope
I don't think that's a real reason he can't get a job flipping hamburgers on a grill.

How is he too incapacitated to work a "regular" job?

I think being a St Aug Alum would probably get him help quicker than the L club
that is if he wants help. that is not a safe assumption

He was a good player. I'm not sure I'd label him a "Tiger great." Sad situation, nevertheless. Seems to me, much of this situation is the result of enabling, but I don't pretend to have an answer.

This I agree with. If he wanted to get out of that situation, he could.

no SSN,
I'm pretty sure anyone who has been on an NFL roster would have to have one of those.

Someone from LSU should look into this and get him some help, help some affordable housing.

That's the key. Most of these guys (don't know his story so not judging him) have mental issues, or are heavily addicted to drugs and/or alcohol - which is why they can't hold a job.
With unemployment and disability, food stamps, section 8 allowances, and other assistance programs there's usually more to it than "hitting a rough patch" for the homeless folks out there.

Exactly. I'm guessing that most of the people commenting didn't even read the article but:
quote:
Scott, a 41-year-old man who said he has been living in a tent under the bridge for more than a year, said that after spending three years in prison on a marijuana charge, he ended up on the streets, without any identification.

Most homeless have mental health issues. But whatever. Some have a need to put others down.
Where are those "If you choose to go out of state, you lose the support we give to our Tigers in Louisiana" group? Well here is a Tiger who needs help. And what does he get, this JA calling him lazy.

But yes there are things he could probably do but every homeless person generally has individual reasons for being where they are. It could be depression, substance abuse, some random medical condition, mental health issues, or a criminal record.
You have to say that he is probably ready for a change by giving his name and waving over a reporter. Props to him for putting his name out and putting a face on the issue. .

Did you?
There were two dudes with the last name Scott. This was the other guy, not Malcolm:
