First reaction to the Grambling Game

Offense is not a big problem.
Defense has regressed. Run defense is especially concerning.
House may have been figured out; he needs to be quick to readjust; it feels like he is waiting until half time analytics input to readjust; wont work if readjustment is needed in the second half.
Our LBs are not savy enough. The line is not eating up enough space. CBs are also not there yet but are more promising than the front 7.
This is the bad side of the portal. You never know how new players will fit or if they are good enough.
Hopefully they can learn fast enough to overcome the SEC matchups.

The run defense was fine against fsu until game was out of hand. FSU rbs ran 21 times for 58 yards before that last drive when the game was basically over. FSU is a very good running team, better than grambling so I'll say we'll be alright.

This offense will struggle against any decent defense. Our defense may actually be worse. Prediction: 5 losses.

The front seven will be ok if they can figure out how to play within the defense together, as a defense. We are getting into the backfield and we are getting pressure, we just aren’t making the tackle bc our players aren’t playing within the system so someone can make a play. We have a guy or two in the backfield often, but we are out of our gaps so it creates a huge hole for the offense to exploit. Once we get that cleaned up then I think we’ll be ok. They need to get batter as a team and the secondary plays a lot of off zone so the defense will give up short plays and a big play if they miss an assignment. I don’t think our defense is built to be completely dominating. It’s built to prevent big plays and be opportunistic when their chance comes. You need time in a defense like this. But it can start to pay off once they’ve had time together. We have to tackle when we get a chance to and we have to start trying to get the ball out. We need better reaction time, better tackling and be more aggressive with the ball.

Defense started out slow last year as well, but then caught on (then faded late due to lack of quality depth). This may be an artifact of House's defenses being difficult to learn.
Grambling had 259 yards in the first half. They had 61 in the second half. So, maybe that is starting to come together.
Of course, if we are going to spend the first couple of games learning how to play defense, we are going to have to quit playing big games to start the year.

We are way over pursuing and leaving the backside wide open. Last week this burned us badly when Travis scrambled. This week the RB's cut back on us but there were some plays in there we simply got blocked and there were big rig gaps for the RB to run through.

Yea. And it almost all happened in half a quarter between end of 3rd and mid of 4th. Thats when they got us right on the chin and made us look like boys. They found the weakness.

Lol this is an awful take.
2nd half drives:
1st drive - 5 carries 12 yards (FG)
2nd drive - 4 carries 5 yards (TD)
3rd drive - 5 carries 29 yards (TD) (13 were on a Travis scramble)
4th drive - 1 carry 13 yards (TD)
15 carries 59 yards. Hardly world beating. 3.9 YPC. The secondary was 100% the problem. Their last drive with 4 minutes left in the game they had a 6 play 40 yard drive of all runs. That’s probably the drive you’re thinking of when they “made us look like boys”

Agree. D coordinator is suspect and our head coach approved taking the best athlete on defense and have him read and react against Florida state.
