His players went out to the Tiger Bar too much. Including the night before Regional games.
He lived in that trailer on stilts across Burbank from Lakeside Daquiris.

After reading this thread would someone refresh my memory about Smoke's "snitching on LSU" after his departure? Not doubting anyone, but not recalling what it was.

Managed to put together a few nice postseason runs to get to Omaha twice after bad (by LSU standards) regular seasons. But then went 0-4 in Omaha.

Yeah the story goes he was a washed up pitcher and Paul saw him tearing it up in the cages and let him hit.

Smoke was a great coach with the ULM Indians, then his fat, lazy arse really sucked at LSU.

Never want to take anything away from making it to Omaha, but the 2004 squad that made it got a huge break when Texas A&M beat top seeded Rice to allow LSU to host the Supers. Rice had three pitchers drafted in the Top 10 that year (only time that has ever happened) but somehow lost to Texas Southern the first game of the regional. Rice made it through the losers bracket and beat A&M in the first game but lost the second when the pitching was getting thin (they had to play doubleheaders in those days).

What. In the years they went to Omaha LSU won the SEC at 20-9 in 2003 and went 41-15 in the regular season in 2004. LSU didn't have a down regular season under Smoke until 2005 and even in 2005 LSU won the West. Then they fell off the cliff in 2006.

The pitching did him in.

And Smoke’s players friggin’ loved Tigerland.

They went 2 and BBQ in Hoover one year and a fan tried to fight Smoke before he could get on the bus.
IIRC this was Smoke's last year.
