I was at lsu at the time and was close to a lot of players that played for both and i can tell you the guys who talked about smoke being a baseball coach and not a manager are 100% correct.

Skip was detail oriented and no stone left unturned and always was striving for better ways to do things, especially off season training.

smoke...he wanted to coach the games and practice but not prepare for them nor really do anything other than show up and coach. He was great in game but sucked at everything else. Every time i went to Sammys he was there. Big game and lost....smoke would be at sammys within the hour drinking.

smoke is also a bitch arse snitch, frick him.

also frick skip for being petty about the camp money and being a tight arse.

as far as paul vs smoke......very similar except paul got us a ship and got us back to another.

So maybe smoke should be like a 1.5 foot statue and Paul like a 3 foot tall one.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fired.

Smoke was average. Made a few World Series and then got on the booze humor has it.

That's not true, I saw him almost everyday off season. Never saw him drink, NOT saying he didn't, but a boozer can't hide.
However I would believe you made that up.

Smoke couldn't get it done at LSU, fact. Don't need to make shite up.

Swear this is a true story. Friend of mine was coaching at another school in Louisiana during the tail end of the Smoke years. Don't remember the exact year. A scout came by one of their pre-season practices the day after attending LSU's. My friend asked the scout "How are the Tigers looking this year?". The scout replied "About like their coach. Fat, happy, and lazy".

That's how baseball is supposed to be!!! That, and old men wearing the same uniform as the players (not the windbreaker shirts they wear now) calling everyone "cocksuckers".

Every time I see him mentioned it sounds like people weren’t a fan, but wasn’t sure if that was just because he didn’t meet expectations.

The hire was very polarizing because the other in-house candidate was Turtle Thomas. From a "popularity with the fans" standpoint, it wasn't even close.

I'm biased because I was #TeamTurtle, but I think he would have been a better choice to continue what Skip had done.

I heard Smoke give speeches during that first year when he was coach in waiting. He was funny, witty and articulate. He made a great impression. I heard him give speeches as time went on and he looked like he was in a fog. He was just in over his head.

I remember those awful Mazda Protege commercials he used to make for the radio. Everytime he pronounced 'Protege', it made me chuckle.

Yes x2

Smoke is also apparently still bitter as he declined to participate in any of the hold the rope stuff

Can confirm there’s no love lost on that family when it comes to LSU.

CSB: His son was a shift manager of mine at Canes over a decade ago. Actively talked shite about LSU and how LSU screwed his dad over. Actively rooted against them in every sport.

Did you ask if he was only working at Cane’s to save his fat arse dad a fortune with the family discount?

Smoke has really proved his doubters wrong since being fired with all the coaching success he’s had

Ha, all I remember is how much he hated LSU. Just mention the name and he’d go off. I think Smoke was coaching somewhere in Florida around this time. Would’ve been something like 2012-2014.
