Agree with OP.

Last season, we had no DL coach and now we have two. They WILL get the most out of what we have.

Secondly, last year Maason just occupied space, so we were kinda like a 3-3 every time he was in.

Scheme alone will help our DL.

I do think it illustrates an interesting point about coaching when you compare how those guys fared in the NFL draft compared to the 2023 DTs:

2019
Lawrence: 4th round 2020
Fehoko: UDFA 2020
Shelvin: 4th round 2021
Ika: 3rd round 2023

2023
Smith: 2nd round 2024
Jefferson: 4th round 2024
Wingo: 6th round 2024
Guillory: TBD

Ika’s NFL future remains to be seen. Shelvin, Fehoko, and Lawrence have been practice squad guys (although Lawrence had earned a starting spot before getting hurt in his 2nd year).

I suspect that the combination of Smith, Wingo, Jefferson, and Guillory will see more NFL starts than the 2019 group. Obviously there’s no way to know for sure right now though.

My point? Well.. I’m certainly not arguing that the 2023 DL was better. They weren’t. That’s my point. I think there’s a chance the 2024 group looks a lot better than the 2023 group based on coaching alone. My biggest concern is the numbers, and the potential for an injury to wreck our DL.

So, you are saying that the depth is a major concern and the players are a complete unknown bc anyone who played much is gone??

Breaking some new ground there Copernicus

DL in today’s NFL are completely different than most college DL.

There just aren’t enough athletic 300lb guys in the whole country to go around. Most successful college defensive linemen are required to do one thing and that’s stopping the run. You can find a bunch of guys on NFL squads or practice squads that can do that adequately but that won’t get you a starting role in today’s NFL.

Being athletic enough to rush the QB sets NFL prospects apart from college DL men. 2019 is proof of that. Tyler Shelvin and Siaki Ika would’ve made amazing nose guards in the 90s or early 2000s but those days are just gone.

Name an impact DT on 2019 roster? None

The 2019 team played an odd front and still had AT LEAST 4-5 DT better than the best DT currently on roster

Shand and Jones should move inside. We have other guys who can play edge.

Having names on a roster is different than having guys that can give you quality snaps.

Can Jalen Lee give us anything? Shone Washington? Those guys transferred without really giving much production to their teams IIRC.
Kimo Makane'ole - can he put in serious work this summer and contribute?

Will be interesting to see if B Davis can mold them into anything.
