Should I just resod or wait all summer to see if this grows back?

Grass was fine until late July/early August when the sun didn't let up in 2023. I stopped watering as much and this entire area was decimated. This picture was taken early last week. St. Augustine.

Should I just wait and see what happens this summer after more rain/more frequent waterings? Note: the very far back patch that is barren was done myself. The area used to be overgrown with foliage that belonged to my neighbors. I've since cut them down to make room for a wildflower and veggie garden I want to try out in the future. Fence line used to be only barren for maybe one foot away from the fence.

For reference, I uploaded the following picture on July 2, 2023. This was when I was much more on top of my waterings (at least 3 times a week during lunch breaks). I can try to get a much more updated photo when the weather lets up this weekend. The only major difference with the old lawn and current lawn photo is that I've killed off most of the weeds that took up a lot of the green space.

What's that random pole? Volleyball net pole? Umbrella pole? Now I'm curious.

If it doesn't bother you for immediate coverage, you can take some plugs from healthy areas and space them out in the dead areas. Fill empty holes with mason sand.

House used to have a satellite dish outside. Cable still runs from the house to that spot. I tell myself I'll dig it out eventually, but here we are.

How would one go about effectively digging out a healthy plug without destroying the root system? I know St. Aug is fairly tough within their roots and will vein out and regrow, but I wasn't sure if there was a specific way to effectively dig out a plug from an existing lawn.

Also, would buying St. Augustine plugs be just as effective? I might go that route first before I decide to dig into my existing lawn. Also, I'm not familiar with the different "brands" of St. Aug plugs. Are some better for South LA than others?

Mason sand AND topsoil mix? Or just mason sand?

LINK

It refills pretty quickly. I've also just done strips 3-4" deep the width of my shovel and just cut up into smaller plugs sized. Yes you can also buy plugs. Can't comment on variations just success I've had refilling bare spots (areas under debris pile after hurricanes for example).

St Augustine crawls pretty quick. I did a checkerboard pattern at a previous house and it filled in quickly. If you’re hesitant to do plugs you could buy a pallet or two and checkerboard it.

Throw down a bunch of native wildflowers and zinnia seeds. Just let it go, and maintain rest of yard. Mow it down in winter with weedwacker, should reseed itself next year

I’ll probably do this. Saw a 64 pack of plugs for $90. Should be able to get them down after this rain has passed.

I assume I should water these just like they’re sod but not too much water?

Sod Solutions plugs

Lots of options with plugs if you want to go that route

Thank you. I purchased the 72 pack from here. Significantly cheaper than Amazon after shipping and taxes, and probably a little better quality.

I take plugs from area with plenty of grass, then take plug from area where grass plug is to go and basically swap plugs. I've never had any issue doing it that way.

I think what I'll send up doing is taking out plugs of weeds/dead spots and filling in with the plugs I just purchased.
