Hopefully an "AC" person here can help. I have a slow leak of refrigerant. AC seems to think it's in the attic part of the system. I was told that there is some kind of stop leak that can be put in where they put the refrigerant in and it should take care of the problem. Is this true? What exactly is it this "stop leak"? About how much am I looking at cost-wise if I try it?

It's an option but kind of like a last resort shot at a "repair". Depending on the age of the system and the exact location and size of the leak it might be worth it if the only other choice is a system replacement or replacing a line set if that is where they can pinpoint the leak. It's probably going to run you a few hundred dollars, maybe $500 at the most if the repair works and they put a few pounds of refrigerant in.

Had a leak on my old R22 unit and they added a pound or so. They didn't say anything about the refrigerant repairing leaks but it never did again for 10 years.
