Garden guy came by today…. Trying to freshen up the yard before moving. We have 3 windmill palms behind the pool, one of which is failing for some reason.

We’re moving to a place nearby with big fan palm of some sorts. And I’d like to add at least one more to block our neighbors view into our yard.

He advised me not to get a new palm planted. Said there’s a disease coming through that will likely wipe out the overwhelming majority of palms within the next 3 years….

Is this hyperbole or is this legit concern? That’s news to me. If it’s already been discussed here, I tried search function and google search.

Lethal bronzing. Some sort of insect I think. I have a few palms that seem OK for now. Not sure about any predictions on the spread of it. Haven't researched it much.

In TX but had some sort of fungus kill 2 palms. The very middle where new fronds grow from basically rotted. Remainder of the trees died off shortly after.

Did he happen to say what the disease is?

Like you, I have no idea about palms or their diseases, but stuff like this interests me. The first thing that comes up on a search is butt rot disease, or Ganoderma butt rot. Apparently it is really on the rise in Florida, and it is very difficult to diagnose prior to symptoms showing. Once you see it, it is too late because there is no known cure. Like other fungi, its spores are carried on the wind making it difficult, or impossible, to prevent the spread.

He didn’t give me a disease name … he said it spreads by birds and bugs.

After a quick google search… seems like “lethal bronzing” might be what he’s referring to, as a previous poster mentioned. Seems like it’s been here for years but really starting to accelerate.

I always prefer asking H&G posters here with direct knowledge or experience instead of google searching.

A leaf hopper is the the only known vector in the the US. It isn't all that widespread outside of Florida and the Caribbean, and seems to be a big issue in nurseries with nursery stock. It seems like there is no known cure for it either once it is established. Trees near an infected tree can be be continuously treated, at a high cost, but infected trees have to be taken out. The leaf hopper and the disease seem to be imported into new areas via nursery stock primarily.

The leaf hopper also loves St. Augustine grasses and can be a vector of disease for it.

Wow. This sucks man.
Just read the IFAS publication and it sounds terrible. It's gone from Tampa to >50% of Florida in less than a decade. And can affect over two dozens types of palms (so far) including native palmettos.

I know in BTR, Nature’s Own handles palms. I saw the owner a couple weeks back. He shows them on their Facebook page, doing a spraying of Palms. I’ll try to get in touch with him, see if I can get some information.

I didn't know about the disease but have noticed a ton of dead looking palm trees in the BR area. Thought it was due to the extended freeze but this seems more likely.

I talked with the owner of Nature’s Own today. They are spraying palms, with close to a 100% survival rate, if caught in time.

Call Natures Own, talk with Mike, he will help direct you with any problems.

All bull shite to sell more Palms. Just like the Boxwood BS disease.

My 5 Palms are in great shape, and my 20 boxwoods.

Best way to check a palm for life, is to dig around the small roots at the base. If they are green and appear normal, the palm is prolly Ok.

115 degree weather, and drought likely the reason.

I watered the shite out of mine, and none have no fricking disease.

BR area.

Would this news sell less palms or more palms? I'm confused on how it could sell more.
