So the place I bought came with an uncovered wooden back deck, but its not in the best of shape. Combination of them painting it too soon probably after building before the wood dried and the previous owner not ever refinishing. So now it has peeling paint and the wood isn't in the best shape, etc.

I'd like to add a roof to it like this eventually (doesnt have to be this fancy beam wise), but I don't think I can DIY the roof (particular tieing into the house roof) and it's not really in the budget to pay someone to build it at the moment.

I can totally replace the deck boards, rails, and any piers and beams that need to be myself though.

Is there anyway I could replace the deck and leave it so a roof could be added later that wouldn't look weird, etc. I guess I could build a pergola type roof that could have a real roof added later. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Is this done right? I could probably do this and just have someone to shingle it. My worry about tieing into it was having to pull up house shingles and it being exposed, but if I can just lay over the old shingles like this I could probably DIY it and then just get shingles put on.

I'm good with carpentery, just never done anything remotely roof related.

I would redo the deck and roof all at once whenever possible. If just an aesthetic thing, live with it. If unsafe, replace just the necessary boards.

Look into eze-breeze windows when you build the roof. It’s a gamechanger

Mostly Aesthetic. The deck boards themselves are OK. The railing is getting bad. But the deck is only about 2-3 feet high, so not a huge deal.

So, is your existing porch rated to carry the extra weight of the new roof? And you're absolutely gonna need a roofer to put valley metal under your 2 newly created valleys.

I plan on replacing the posts anyway, probably only keep the beams.

Yeah, I don't plan on doing any roof part myself other than maybe what's in that video. Get the plywood up, then let a roofer do that and the silhingles, etc.
