Looking to put a wood privacy fence up soon. Keep going back and forth on 6' or 8'. Reason 8' is being considered, is because my house and and pool sit up on a 3 1/2ft house pad. Area where fence will be placed is not as elevated. This will only be down one side of property to block a neighborhood, not enclosing my backyard.

Anyone here have 8' fence and wish they would've gone with 6'?

I have a 6’ fence with a section of it being 8’ due to a shitty neighbor I had when I had it built. The 8’ section broke off the posts after bending the posts during Ida. I’m a cheap arse and decided to fix it myself - all by myself. Let me tell you, if you go 8’ and something similar happens to it, you better be willing to pay a crew to pick it up and reattach it because fixing mine was one of the most intense workouts I’ve ever gone through.

Is 8’ allowed by city code and/or Hoa?

It's allowed where I am as long as it doesn't extend further than the front of my house. I'm not in a subdivision though so I really didn't even look into it until after it was built.

I almost did 8' but a fence builder told me it will curl/warp over time. I still wish we had in the front portion of the fence that faces the road because when I'm on elevated deck in the back, I'm partially visible from the sidewalk/road while grilling. I might add some lattice to it.

I would do 8 foot if allowed...and consider board on board if you don't want people looking through the cracks

They will all curl or warp over time. The best way to prevent that is four runners, or stringers on an 8’ fence. Three is ok for 6’.
And use a good quality fence board.

What about a shrubbery?

He’s got a pool. Most city codes & insurance carriers require a fence.

I assumed he had a small transparent fence near the pool and this was more for privacy along the property line.

You could also install a fence and a shrubbery. 8’ fences are so tall and gaudy.

We went 8' for a privacy wall/fence. The section where our driveways are about 2' apart I went wood on wood to cover spaces. We also went 1x6x8 treated boards with even flat top instead of standard pickets. Looks better

Privacy is main concern

I looked at doing shrubbery but that wouldn't be offering privacy for a couple years I'd imagine.

They also make 7’ boards. I have 7’ with a 8” mud board and I find it to be the perfect height.

I recently replaced a damaged section of a 6' fence and now wish I'd gone with 8'. Most screening foliage has been removed. The back neighbor leaves 3 soffit mounted flood lights on all night shining directly through my windows. An 8' fence would block some of that light.

I'm thinking about topping my 6' fence with a 2' wire trellis and letting Virginia creeper take over. My hope is that wire + vines stand up better to hurricanes.

Also, fence contractor cautioned that the quality of fencing lumber has declined.

Replaced our fence 2 years ago, and went with 8 feet as well as building it up a few inches so that rain water would not sit on the boards and rot them. Results in a little more than an 8 foot fence, that I wouldn't change at all. We had the same issue in that our pool pad was built up and I could see directly into my backyard neighbors windows over our previous 6 foot fence. Now we have true privacy. Wasn't cheap, but it was worth every penny.

A three rail shouldn’t warp if built properly

Why not split the difference and go with 7’?

Half of mine is 7 feet and man that's tall. But it's on the same elevation as the rest of my property. If you do go taller than 6, be sure to get stronger posts than regular treated 4x4. Schedule 40 or 4x6 / 6x6 deep in the ground. 7 and 8 foot fence is a big arse sail in hurricane force winds.

That being said, Ida leaned half of it almost completely over and snapped the other half like twigs. We are replacing with 6 ft.

Regardless of what you do, I recommend steel posts in concrete. Makes it so much easier to replace runners and boards
