Hey guys, long time poster under a different name here. I used to be involved on this forum under a different name. Here we go.

During the summer (July), I was doing barbell skull crushers with 135, sets of 10. Shortly after, I noticed my elbow started flaring up and giving me issues. I continued to train 5x a week and just took advil and used elbow wraps on pressing movements. I was still BB pressing 405+ but with extreme discomfort. I was getting ready to get in competition shape (powerlifting) for 2024. I wanted to make sure my body was good to go so I finally went to the doctor about my elbow. So in December I got checked out and turns out, what I thought was tendonitis, was a complete rupture of my distal tricep tendon. Unreal. I had surgery on Jan 19. I was told I would be about 6-12 months for recovery, however therapy went great and I was fully released about 3 weeks ago.

However, even though I am fully released, I can still tell I am nowhere near 100%. I can barely even bench press 135 now without discomfort i my elbow. Pressing movements are still a long way from being 100%.

Has anybody ever went under this type of injury or know anybody who has? Looking for a light at the end of the tunnel. Even though I am fully relseased back training, I am nowhere near 100%. Wondering how long I can expect until I'm feeling better and moving weight. Thank you in advance,

Did you get to lift as part of your therapy? I ask because a lot of clinics do not actually have proper gym equipment to asses if you are fully prepared to enter the independent phase of rehab. Based on my patient’s goals they are either squatting, deadlifting, benching, overhead pressing, etc. every session to work towards what their goals.

Have you talked to your Physical Therapist? It sounds like you were released early but should be cautious as you recover. That's a terrible injury and honestly you may need to reset your expectations.

So full recovery is supposed to be 6 - 12 months and you expected to be back to full strength at 4 months? PT maybe went well and you are functional on a daily basis so they DC’d you but I would expect it to take time to build back up to your previous strength levels. Like maybe 6-12 months.

Released =/= recovered

You will probably not be back to your old self until at least 12 months. A torn tricep is an awful injury. Keep at it though, you'll be back to your old self before you know it,. However, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, the last thing you need to do is re-injure yourself

Feel for you. Never had a tear like that and still could bench a house. I would focus on stretching and small loads on that tricep only. You gonna have a major imbalance. Definitely recommend a physical therapist.
Good luck

see a PT that also lifts.

I know Jared at explosive mechanics over in Peachtree GA has talked about his rupture. He does lots of heavy pressdowns to build it back up.

see a PT though, one that understands what you are talking about when it comes to lifting.

I had surgery on both my elbows and had to restart by benching an empty bar. I would tell you start much lighter than you think you have to.

I wound up pushing too hard too early and flared up tendinitis. That made me have to back down to resolve and build back.

Don't repeat my mistakes. Start low and take it slow.

Also, one thing I liked in rehab...incorporate BFR training in the affected area. It lets you use minimal weights but also drives a ton of blood into the area. Anecdotally, I always felt like the flush from BFR aided with rehab a good amount.
