I'm 60, and am comfortable playing anything 6300 or shorter. That's my first priority when playing any course other than my home course. Not sure age has any factor.

I can only drive it about 270 so around here the white tees are typically better suited to my distances and I'm only 40.

It isn't about age.

I am 53 and have never been a long hitter. Usually carry a driver about 220 and might get 235 with a good roll out . Probably in the fairway on 12 or 13 out of the usual 14 shots. I hit either dead straight or a slight draw. Pretty decent within 130 yards on approach and on the par 4s where I have 150 left I just hit a hybrid. Par 5s I will hit a 3 or 5 wood usually leaving me a 50 yard or less wedge. Hardly ever reach a par 5 in two shots. Enough to keep it fun and shoot mid 80s most of the time. I almost always play the whites and have been since I was in my mid 40s.

I have never played anything but the white tees

Was always told you should do it by handicap just as much as distance

I have seen a decent amount of younger guys that hit it decently far playing the tips as a 12 handicap. Seems silly

63 years young.
Try to play a distance that leaves my approach at about 150 (7 or 8 iron). I'm just not ready to play driver wedge all day. Boring. More comfortable at 6100-6300. Right now distance isn't the problem, inconsistent play is the issue (and a bad back).

Let’s do it this way

Trackman average says pga tour players carry driver 297

So let’s say you are an amateur country club golfer that hits it far for an an everyday guy, let’s say you carry it 260. That’s 87% of the pga distance

Pga average course length is 7,300 yards

87% of 7,300 is 6,350 yards

So a longer hitting amateur should be playing the whites if he wants to be similar to the pros. Why people think you should wait til your old makes absolutely no sense but to each their own

There’s also no law that says you have to play the same tees.

I mix some orange tees in. Not necessarily the same ones either. Last round on Judge I hit every club in the bag.

Admittedly the 6-iron was because of a terrible drive, but I knocked it on with it so that was ok. (Though i should have hit it on 12 instead of the 7).

My Club’s MGA lets you play the white tees if your age plus handicap is over 70. So I play whites in MGA events and Blues on normal rounds.

Played Oakwing yesterday in Alec.
I play Oakwing and Links mostly. I actually do not like the white tees for the most part.

I am in a shoulder sling right now, so I might change my mind about that real quick.

My group is all over 65.

We play yardages that are comfortable.

Usually 6500-6700 fits everyone in the group right now.

Golf would be more enjoyable and rounds would be faster if every golf moved up one tee box from where they think they should be playing from.

Yup. We have a course up here that specifically has signs up on 1st tee:

black - Handicaps under 5
blue - handicaps 5-9
white - handicaps 10+

That group must be known as the “Bombers”.

I play at 5960 most days. I probably will move up again soon. Nobody has ever said to me, “you hit that too far.”

As long as everyone is keeping up the pace of play and enjoying their round, I don’t care where others decide to play.

Scores are a little better off a more forward tee, but IF you miss your second putt- it’s still a three putt!

If you can carry it 260 and play 6300 yd courses, you should be eating it up.

You would be playing a course as the pros play it

You would have wedges and short irons into most par 4s

And no you aren’t going to eat it up. Yo give a 10 handicap 100 yards into every single hole to reach GIR and they are going to shoot in the 80s still on average

For example, if a 10 handicap played every par 3 from 100 yards on the tee box, hit their 2nd shot on every par 4 and third shot on every par 5 from 100 yards they would average 81

Tell me why a high or mid handicap should set themselves up to be taking longer clubs into greens than the best in the world so. Makes zero sense. Watching high handicappers hit 6 irons into most of their par 4s as pros hit 8 or 9 iron makes no sense

I’m going to disagree slightly. 6 iron is a club they should be able to get in the general vicinity of the green. 5 or higher though I’d agree with you.

This is true.
There is a better chance for the player to break 80 once tee up, but it does not make 18 shots easier. Most 10 foot putts are missed- by tour pros. Dispersion for a tour pro on a given shot is 3% when playing well.

My course - Pine Lakes Country Club - in Myrtle Beach is a par 70, only 2 par fives. From the Whites it's 6300 yards. The 12 par 4s average 382 yds.
The Blues are 6750.
.
If you were to substitute 2 of the par 4s for the average of the par 5s, it would be 6600 yards from the Whites. From the Reds its 5750 yards, so using my rough math, that would equate to ~ 6000 yards

We have the following from longest to shortest:

black(champ tees)
blue
white
red (65+)
gold(women)

Typically we play a blue/white combo in our games. Blues for p4 and p5, and whites for p3's. If you are 65 and want to play all whites, you aren't invited

this speeds up rounds as the par 5's arent as reachable, but doesn't require 200 yard shots into p3's
