I am 65 years old. I just had shoulder surgery and have had some lower back issues for a while. Might be time to move on up.

The minute my association lets me play up, I’m moving.

In a friendly game, it really depends on a few things.
How far can you hit a drive?
Can you reach 150 on a normal length par 4?
What do you hit from 150?
What tees let you hit driver scoring iron (7 or below) on normal par 4s?

I’m watching one of my friends refuse to give up, but has to hit 4/5 hybrid into par 4s. He miserable, but pride is in his way.

We recently convinced guys at our club that it was ok to play whatever tees make you happy. Not waiting until 65 or whatever….immediate change in way they feel about the game and have more guys playing the weekend games.

Golf is hard enough, unless you’re playing a competition that designates what tees you play from, no need to make it less enjoyable.

My rule of thumb is if I hit a great drive and a great 3-wood can I reach the shortest par 5.

For me that’s the white tees at rtj in Prattville. I’m not playing tournament anymore so I’ll hit from some orange tees as well to give me a range of irons for approach shots.

Driver carry per my Rhapsodo is 228. So it’s not like I’m hitting flip wedge all day even so.

I came to the reality at 69...

it's scary the swing speed you lose and hit a 7 iron where you used to hit a 9 iron...

but the game is fun again...

Played Oakwing yesterday in Alec. I play with a couple of 40 something’s and a twenty something. I’m 67. We play the one ups tees which is gold. My playing partner s say move up, but can’t pull myself to do it. I was one under after 5, shot 40 on the front, 45 on the back. Mostly due to tee shots and poor chipping. I’m 20-30 yards behind them off the tee but make up the difference with my putter. In tournament s I move up. But weekly game, I’m back with the youngsters. Love rubbing it in when I beat them..

I’m 63 and normally choose the tees around 64-6500 yds. At the course I play most often the back tees are blues, regular are whites, and senior tees gold. I usually play whites but have played the golds a few times. The golds force me to play differently from several tees because trouble comes into play that I won’t reach from the other tees.

I moved up when I was hitting more fairway woods and hybrids than irons into par 4s on my home course.

I still have a few fairway woods and hybrids, but I get to use the whole set on the 10 par 4s instead of drive, 5 wood, chip, etc.

I only carry it about 190 now, and if it is wet- it is difficult with no roll. On a warm, dry day when my body feels great and can move the club faster and carry over 220 and with roll get it to 240, but we don’t really get long, dry spells and our super waters the shite out of the course.
And my body feels pain most days.

If I play somewhere I’ve never played, I pick a tee around 6000 yards. That’s plenty of golf for moi. I’m not trying to qualify for the Tour, LIV, the green jacket, the gold jacket, etc

This is so true.

With GHIN rating every hole, I wish you could just randomly mix and match tees to generate a round.

Play a gold tee par 5, a blue tee par 3, some of each kind. Enter the tee you played on each hole and generate a differential.

After work we mix tees with a spinner app and it’s fun. Makes me play some blue tees and some big hitters play gold tees. Gives you a fresh course to play, but we can’t really enter the score bc it’s a mixture of all tees.

Watch the pros. They are hitting short irons to every par 4, most par 3s and reaching 3/4 of the par 5s in two. Play the tees that allow you to do that.

Rory took gap wedge into a 500 yard par 4 today….

Why amateurs play par 4s where they are hitting 6 irons into the green makes zero sense

It’s a hoot.

Big hitters swinging a wedge from an up tee par 3. Me swinging fairway wood on a mid tee par 3. Guys having to sort out how far the creek is from forward tee. Some of the tees are angled differently as well. Basically a supply of golf holes that pops up randomly. Strangely, the tee shots as far as keeping it in play are easier from the back- I can’t hit it far enough to get in trouble back there. It’s fun to all play the same tee. It’s more efficient after work.

People play wayyyyyy too far back. Pga tour average 2nd shot on a par 4 is 128 yards. What’s yours ? I’f it’s higher you need to play up. It’s got nothing to do with age and everything to do with how far you hit it.
