Does anybody have experience with one of these? I’m a complete novice when it comes to espresso machines. I’ve been looking for months at the various options in my price range (<$1000 for machine + grinder) but I get so overwhelmed by the pros and cons of each I just give up and walk to the coffee shop. Based on my research, at my price range the grinder is more important than the machine so I’m wondering if these machines with a grinder built-in are worth it.

My advice is that if you want to have a quality grinder and really good espresso both for under $1,000 total, get a Flair espresso maker and a good quality mid-priced single dose grinder, like a Turin DF 64. It will take a little practice but the top end potential of the Flair espresso makers is perfect espresso, without the high price.

In my experience, having started with a Flair Pro 2, I can assure you that the Flair will give you a superior cup of coffee for a very reasonable price, although you will have to actually learn what you are doing. They sell refurbished units on their website if you want to save a few more dollars.

If your budget is under $1,000, and you aren't making coffee for 3 or 4 people each day, that's what I would recommend.

Isn’t the flair more expensive than the Turin Legato? Get the 64 and Legato. Feel like the Flair would be a pain in the arse. You got to preheat with multiple pulls, you can’t get constant pressure because the pressure is generated from the arm ratchet? Get a Gaggia Classic or Legato and pair it with the DF64. That’s a good beginner setup for under $1k.

Can’t argue with any of that, except that the Pro 2 is less than the Legato. It’s just a matter of preference. Lever machines are classics. There’s nothing wrong with using a lever, especially if it has a pressure gauge so you can learn to control the pressures. It gives you total control, and you will learn quickly what the actual variables are that go into great coffee. It was what i learned using the Flair that led me to select the upgrade machine that I got. I wouldn’t have known what the trade offs were if I hadn’t done it manually for a while.

But you are correct that the Legato is probably the best deal for a pump driven machine at its price. It all depends upon which trade offs you are willing to make.

Is there that much difference between a 64 and 40 grinder? I know the 64 has a bigger surface area

Yes, and supposed to be a better cup with the larger surface area of the burr in theory. I’ve come to realize my pallet is not all that refined. I do know that since I started doing espresso shots at home, most coffee houses suck at espresso.

Good thread.

I'm still quietly following along. Got a birthday later this month, so I asked for Niche zero for my gift... so it's nice to see the suggestions on where to buy coffee.

We use an Oxo coffee pot now, and reviews are acceptable for it, so it'll do for now. Looking forward to some fresh ground brews.

Abso-freaking-lutely.

I stopped at a coffee shop the other day and they served me an Americano that was so bad I poured it out in the parking lot.

Get the 64 and Legato

I bought the Breville Barista Express because I didn’t want to miss the deal, but it ended up being slightly too tall to fit under my counter. That, coupled with my buyers remorse, made me abuse Amazons generous return policy and send it back.

I just bought the Legato and DF64 Gen 2, but the grinder is on pre-order and will take several weeks to ship. The previous DF64 only had yellow left in stock.

Once my return to Amazon is complete, I’m going to use some gift cards to buy some accessories. What are some good recommendations?

If you bought from Turin/Espresso Outlet, their open box DF64’s are cheaper and practically good as new. Just FYI if you don’t want to wait.

Accessories:
- 58mm bottomless portafilter
- spring loaded tamper 58.3mm or 58.5mm
- scale
- WDT tool
- knockbox for pucks
- milk steaming pitcher
- Cafiza for back flushing

You can get all of those items on Amazon.

I would also recommend one of those screens that go on after you tamp. I feel like I get less channeling and it also keeps the machine cleaner.

Just bought the Profitec Go. I bought the Turin 64v2 3 weeks ago so that should be here soon. Looking forward to my morning routine again as my French press is making some wack shite.

Looking forward to a first-party review of this set up. I have a Profitec pro 600 and can attest that Profitecs are well made and reliable. The Go looks like a great little machine. My sister is considering getting one right now. Also, the Turin 64 is a high quality grinder, so you are going to get your best likely outcome, with great beans.

I guess the task now is to identify coffee beans that will make great espresso.

I'll definitely let you know. I'm in The Woodlands, TX and I've heard great things about 2 local joints that roast their own beans I'm gonna try next (purefi and conduit).

If you’re looking for a daily bean that’s reasonably price, fresh roast coffee . com is a good option. I’ve purchased several varieties and they’ve all been great.

This is funny that you mention this. I was in Miami for work and didn’t realize I was staying around little Cuba. I dropped into a little coffee shop and got an espresso and I was hooked.

I can vouch for freshroastedcoffee.com as well. Been on auto ship with them for around 3 years now. Their prices are pretty hard to beat. I just changed my subscription from 2lbs Ethiopian Sidamo to an Organic Honduran Marcala $30 shipped. Used to get the Fog Kicker Blend for drip and it was under $25 for 2lbs I think.

I got the grinder yesterday so I can finally try out the Legato. The bottomless portafilter arrives tomorrow so I’m using the one that came with the machine. I’ve tried three shots so far, the first two coming out incredibly sour. My third shot tasted okay after grinding finer each time. I’m measuring 19g of beans and from what I’ve gathered from YouTube and Reddit, I should be expecting roughly 38g of espresso. I didn’t measure the first time, but the last two attempts both yielded 30g of espresso at different grind settings, the last taking 25 seconds. I’m using the automatic button on the machine. What should I adjust to get a 1:2 ratio that I think I should be getting?
