I know after Katrina hit all along West End Blvd. they had mountains of trash and other areas with nothing but trees.
They had huge industrial chippers eating up those tree trunks and limbs to be hauled off to who knows where.
In my area I've seen some pretty large oak trees being cut up and just piled on the median or curbside to be picked up, and none of it was of any size to use for milling lumber from them.

I've worked a couple of storms in the past and on those, FEMA/EPA/locals would set up in a big field to handle tree debris. All the dumptrucks would dump the debris in giant arse piles. FEMA's people would track the number of trips each dump truck made for reimbursement, the EPA folks would make sure there was no hazardous waste coming into the site (that went elsewhere), and there was a crew of contractors running heavy equipment feeding a ginormous incinerator.
I do not know if that's the MO for every storm or if that's something they used to do and no longer do. I'd imagine that in some areas, incinerators would be right the frick out, too. It's just what I saw when my work still involved that kind of stuff.

After Sally hit Alabama there were huge staging areas for the down trees, etc. where they were mulched up and loaded onto huge trucks. Where they went after that I don't know.

I just saw some burning piles not far from my house. But I’m not sure if they are the trees or just other debris piles.

Also his buddies in whatever industry that has access to trucks gets the hauling contract and makes a killing as well
This is exactly why lots of people run for office, and their friends get out and bust arse to help get them elected. Funneling gubment dollars into their pockets, whether it be on daily projects or emergency projects.
Perhaps the real reason why the governor and mayor of NOLA love covid; all that fed money pouring through their coffers.
I don't mean to be political, but that's the reality, either side of the aisle.

I wish I had a portable sawmill to make lumber out of the pines on our family property. We have a bunch of beautiful trees on the ground that will go to waste, not to mention the oaks I see on trash piles around town.

Much gets hauled to C&D landfills after being chipped.
