My grandmother on my mom's side made an absurd amount of snacks and candy during Christmas. My favorite was the chocolate covered peanut butter balls. Much better than the shite Reese's sells.

Rice Crispy bars with peanut butter mixed in and chocolate on the top. A couple of these and a cold Diet Rite after a day of swimming and fishing in the lake they lived on made me one happy kid.

Oh yeah. Juicy Fruit gum. How could I forget? Grandad always had a bunch of it.

And he used to have a bag of those strawberry hard candy's that had the soft middle.

My grandfather used to keep these chocolate covered graham cracker cookie type things in the fridge and would look forward to having them when I visited. Something about them being chilled was so damn good.

Grandparents had normal stuff like Pringles and various cookies. My grandmother did not cook much.

But my great-grandmother always had freshly made custard in the fridge, and let us drink Coke. And she had a big box of malted milk balls in the freezer. She was awesome.

My grandparents would pick me up in Green Bay and head to Chicago to see my aunt and uncle and a cousin that I really liked for a long weekend a couple times a year.

I’d hop in the back seat and there’d be a mini cooler with a six pack of dads root beer. Then a bag of Doritos and some cookies my grandma made.

On the way back we made a burger and frozen custard stop north of Milwaukee.

8 year old me thought those road trips to the big city were the best thing on earth.

My other grandma was a shockingly bad cook for someone who grew fairly poor and had 5 kids. But they had a mini dirt bike I could ride in a big field next to their house, so I let the crappy cooking slide.
