Ok we me first start this off and say I agree 5/$75 is an overpay especially after Cook, a better all around and and bell cow just signed for 5/$63. BUT in reality this isn’t THAT bad. It’s really a 6 year $77.13 but only 45% is guaranteed money. There will surely be a big signing bonus and we will use a good bit of the $6 million we have now to make sure his cap hit is small for next year so they can and WIL sign Lattimore and Ramcyzk, you’re a fool if you think they let them go. This will mean the end of Rankins and Marcus Williams but we have CJGJ to replace him, the draft next year and PJ Williams has blossomed into a good corner/safety hybrid. Onyemata and Shy Tuttle are ready this year to replace Rankins. Then after 3 more years with us getting the prime years of Kamara’s career we will be free of most or all of his guaranteed money and have the freedom to move on if we choose and draft a cheaper, younger replacement without screwing the cap up. It’s not all bad here.

Cap may drop to $175 Million next year and Saints are on hook for $241 Million already.
Let's hear more whining from the poor mistreated N.ot F.or L.ong crowd that hate the United States of America ....

Yeah, rankins is an interesting one. He hasn’t been able to stay healthy but when he is he is an absolute monster. I’m curious to see how he does this year. I can see them bringing him back but it would be mean losing onyemata and brown! Brown is gonna be gone after this year regardless to free up money. Williams will be gone after this year. I like him as a player but if you’re gonna lose a position safety would be one of the first imo

Saints should have paid Ingram when they had the chance. Kamara has been shitty since Mark left.
It was 1 season and the injury was much more the reason than Ingram.

Saints restructured Rankins in order to sign Kamara. Added 2 voidable years to his contract. More dead money for future years.

That's a ignorant take.

The FO did not decide to lose it's RT and/or Latt for AK.

Been hearing this kind of BS forever.

Ingram developed nicely over the years but Murray is no slouch. He had flashes of great play throughout the year.

Last year’s rushing woe stretches were more on Sean Payton and Kamara being hobbled than Ingram being gone.

Rankins has a foot condition that isn’t correctable and leaves him vulnerable to Achilles injuries so even after restructuring his deal today for Kamara’s deal I don’t see him in this teams plans.

Giving running backs huge contracts in the NFL is dumb. Been proven time and time again.

Runningbacks are probably the easiest position to overpay, considering shelf life and abundance of talent available coming out of college every year.

I feel like this is a quote spilled out way too often for running backs. People and the media fell into the Belichick line of thinking for the position, but what worked for him isn’t the standard for everyone else. Every position in the NFL has high picks that don’t live up to the billing and later round picks that become all-pro. We can scan the top 5 for every position and see that it’s not just Running Backs that “aren’t worth 1st round picks.” Kamara was hurt last season, but he does have the accolades to be paid like the best in the league.

What’s the contract history success of RBs who see 100 targets a year?

Nobody said RB’s aren’t worth a 1st round pick and nothing you said disproves what I said about RB’s being easy, or maybe the easiest, to overpay with a big contract.

Only one SB team in the last decade had a heavily invested-in RB, Seattle with Beastmode. And even they struck gold with a rookie QB deal and other major draft hits on rookie deals.

Not saying teams can’t be successful with a highly paid RB, but the most successful teams in recent history apparently haven’t had to.. I like Kamara FWIW and don’t really care if it’s ~$2-$3m more than what the majority thinks he’s “worth”

2019 chiefs - Damien Williams 2/5.1
2018 patriots - James white 3/12, Sony 4/9.6
2017 eagles - Blount 1/1.25, ajayi 4/2.5
2016 patriots - Blount 1/1.1, Dion Lewis 2/2.6
2015 broncos - CJA 3/1.5, Ronnie hillman 4/3
2014 patriots - Blount 2/1.7, Vereen 4/3.4
2013 Seahawks - lynch 4/30
2012 Baltimore - ray rice 1/7.7
2011 giants - Ahmad Bradshaw 4/18
2010 packers - James starks 4/2
2009 saints - Pierre/ bell / bush

Just some quick evidence of why paying running backs a substantial amount has not resulted in winning Super Bowls. Regardless of his ability to catch, kamara is not worth the amount we paid for him. I hope he proves this pattern wrong and we win a super bowl. But the patriots have proven you don’t need one rb that can catch and run when you can pay one of each very little to excel in each respectively. The rest of the teams show you don’t have to over pay a running back to win a super bowl with how the game is played these days.

Yeah, Lynch with the Seahawks is the only significant contract in that group. And that was with a rookie-deal QB and several other key players still on rookie deals.

It's only a problem if we cannot afford other players or our own elite ones.

Until then, it's a slight overpay (I said 12mil max imho), but that 3mil won't be the difference between us keeping Williams, ram, or Lattimore

Yeah the list goes on and on. There are tons of rbs that can have a ton of success in a certain scheme with a solidly built offensive line that you can pay below average money for. Defense, o line and qb play are the biggest factors in winning Super Bowls.

Per Mike Triplett, the deal only has $34M in guarantees, so we are protected if his production falls off. I see this as a win.

Sounds like a standard Saints' contract where the first 2 years and signing bonus are guaranteed, but then we can split after that when the money gets high and the production slips.

And if the production doesn't slip he gets an extension to lower his hit. Rinse and repeat.
